Dying by the thousands in one California river

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Baby salmon are dying by the thousands in one California river, and an entire run of endangered salmon could be wiped out in another. Fishermen who make their living off adult salmon, once they enter the Pacific Ocean, are sounding the alarm as blistering heat waves and extended drought in the U.S. West raise water temperatures and imperil fish from Idaho to California.

Hundreds of thousands of young salmon are dying in Northern California’s Klamath River as low water levels brought about by drought allow a parasite to thrive, devastating a Native American tribe whose diet and traditions are tied to the fish. And wildlife officials said the Sacramento River is facing a “near-complete loss” of young Chinook salmon due to abnormally warm water.

They won’t do anything. Most of what Fish and Game does in the last few years is reactive, not proactive before everything hits the fan. The people at the top rarely have the fish and game, nor the sportsman at the top of their priority list. We pay the highest license and tags in the US and get little in return for that.

Blame pikeminnow, striped bass or some other boogeyman while more water is pumped south and no new reservoirs are built.

DFGW has little to do with this as also the indigenous tribes along the river. The farmers have this one in their pocket and it’s been there for years. This year has brought big concerns to the farmers now because they don’t want any water to go down and out to the ocean. The damn removals won’t happen anytime soon with the ongoing drought and the river will probably go stagnant in turn killing the entire run mirroring the same issue back in 2002 It took years to rebound from that. It’s too bad profit rides higher then respect for our lands.
