More MPH out of your Boat

Post by ash »

Yesterday in the downpours I was thinking man I need to re-apply my windows with some Rain X. Then the idea hit me!

How much more MPH do you think I would get out of my boat if I applied Rain-X to the hull and the pad? I mean the water would start to repel from the boat. I even have a name....

I could call it Mosses Boat Wash.

I think to go faster you would sand the bottom. I'm not sure how that stuff works , but I do know a rough bottom that collects air , breaks surface tenison and allows a boat to go faster is the way to go

Wow, you might even get an amazing 1/2 MPH faster. Call me strange, but I don't worry about how fast my boat can get me to the fish. I drive one of those slow Ranger 520's that "only" do 69 MPH. So, I worry more about making my time more effective with the trolling motor down. Haa Haa. Just messing with ya. Hey, if I see ya going by real fast while I'm stroking fish, I'll give ya a thumbs up on how cool the boat looks going that fast. Git 'er dun, have fun.

I wouldn't think the 2' of hull that actually contacts the water would cause that much drag...

Waxing the hull below the water line actually slows down the boat. Rod is right about 'sanding" but I dont have the heart to do it to mine,lol.. The slick surface grips (friction) . Try filling up a glass with water to the very top, take a metal spoon and lower it to the water, not under..and lift it up slightly, the water grips and you bring up the water slightly before it lets go..There ya go...your useless information for the day!! Your thoughts may have some merit

Post by Jim Conlow Sr. »

I know that on crude oil pipelines they coat the inside of the pipes with an anhydrous coating that repels contact with water. Crude oil contains a percentage of water and when the pressure of pumping is applied the water being of a lessor viscosity than the crude, the water is forced to the outside of the mass and when it contacts the anhydrous coating it acts as a lubercant between the pipe and the crude oil and therefore requires a lessor pressure to cause it to flow through the pipe.
Your Idea might just work, to what degree though is the question

What you say is true some people

Post by Jim Conlow Sr. »

Some of the race boat people have developed an orange peel type of coating to accomplish the increased air contact between the water, and the hull

Funny i have owned my boat now for six year's and have yet to fully trim it out and go wide open. I bet that Ranger would do at least 55mph

Here's another interesting consideration. When I run 4800-4900 RPM (which is most of the time) I am at 57-58 GPS. When I go to WOT AND Full trim, I only get 3-4 more mph. And the gas consumption goes through the ROOF. So I will be happy with my speed and get there a minute or two behind ya!!

Gator, we covered that! It is the weight concept. You try to trim it up and with you in the boat, the bow can't get out of the water. HA! HA!

Call me about that patio cover

I find extra virgin olive oil with just a hint of basil makes for a very slick ride. OOPS, NM, that's what I put on the girl friend. :D

So if the sanding logic is accurate, I can sand the bottom of my rig and go from 25 mph (on gps) to maybe 26 mph. Now that is performance... :P

That wouldn't be a bad performance gain just from sanding your pad. Some guys actually spend thousands of dollars just for a 3-5 mph gain!

Jonathan, for true fog-separation, you need to saturate a small towel and tie it onto your front navigation light as well as to spray down your trolling motor prop!!

See what you gone and started here??? You should now forever be known as the Rain-X Kid!!!

That's a joke, son - a joke I tell ya!
