AC Pro Am Results

Post by Guest »

Congrats to Bob Delorenzi on his win this weekend at Clear Lake.
Also, congrats to Mike Tobey and Billy Hines in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

It was a fun event. The draw was a little clustered but, we were shooting for the fairest possible draw. With the pro's pulling their Ams names from a bucket it was a fair as possible. Not that any previous weren't as fair, but there are always those who don't think it is. This one was unquestionable.

The barbeque was awesome, Wazzuu Barbeque from Oakland California was on hand to barbeque up some pork, chicken and hot links. If you are ever in a need for some catered Barbeque this guy is the guy to call.

The two weigh ins in one day was awesome and the feedback from the anglers was almost unanimous in that it was a great time. Really made for an interesting event, knowing you needed a morning bite and a truly afternoon/evening bite to win this thing.

Congrats to Chad Buckley on the Am side who was able to win even with a late penalty for the third weigh in. In second and third on the Am side were Jim Larosa and Matt Blanco. Congrats to them as well.

Thanks to the Angler's Choice sponsors - Legend Boats, Mercury Marine, Lowrance, Motorguide, BassTackleDepot.com and Bass West USA. Without these fine companies the Pro Am events would not be possible!

The results are posted on the Anglers Choice website.

I'll let him know...

It's a great format - we need to have more events like this... It really was a blast, I don't care who was running it! A little touchy with DFG but, what a blast!

Oh yeah, and we've had that format planned since last August when we set this years schedule! I know we started advertising it in the January/February issue of Bass West this year.

Tom, I heard you were in it too, how did you do? How about a mini-report of how it went- where and how you fished, etc.. I'm trying to learn that lake and was up there during the event. I asked a couple of folks to say hi for me as I did not see you on the water- big lake.

I got 10 frog fish after figuring out the pattern Thursday (averaging 2.5 pounds each- up to 3.5 lbs). Threw Buzzbaits all day on Friday (got 9 averaging 3 pounds each -up to 5 lbs). Really got 'em good along the boulders when the wind came up in the afternoon - the waves threatened to sink my little 12' aluminum boat at times! Saw some guys doing well with the brush hog about 50 foot off shore just about anywhere, one went 8 lbs but I was stuck on topwater.

Tossed my new Lunker Plunker a little (I got the smaller bass one from the friendly / knowledgeable folks at Hook, Line and Sinker in Martinez as I fished the Delta on Mon., Tues and Wed.) and got one blow-up and then followed it up with the buzz for the 3# that had tried to eat it. I hit a rock a couple of times so I'm not going to frame the lure as I was first thinking of doing, now that the finish is not quite so beautiful (gonna have to get the paint and varnish out actually for one side at least).

I had a blast but 12-14 hours a day in an aluminum boat fighting waves and wind while casting topwater the whole day can take it's toll on the body. I'll post a couple of pics later.

Hey Otay -
Well I stunk it up! 14, 15 & 15 lbs in the three weigh ins. I went looking for big fish with a carolina rig... Should have stuck with my pattern I was on for the past couple of months. Pepper Jigs on deep rocks... The frog fish were there, a lot of fun... but, not going to win the tournament. I caught probably 20 frog fish over the 3 weigh ins.. the bigges was about 4.5 lbs. I had a GIANT miss the bait in a foot of water. The area's I fished where between State Park and Long Tule Point. For the deeper stuff I fished around windflower and near Konocti Harbor... I am sure we'll here how the winners caught them in the near future! I know Mike Tobey was on them pretty good and he is a regular on here - maybe he will let the secrets out!

Sorry I wasn't able to see you up there.. I thought you were in Monterey!

Hey Tom, any problems with going out of Konocti? All the negative posts lately have me questioning about the Champion / Stratos tourney there on 09-08-07. Hows the water level when launching there? and is it as bad to stay there as everyone keeps posting? Also do you have a recomendation as to where else to stay close to Konocti? Thanks in advance.

Konocti Vista was fine - No problems on the water level there.

KVC isn't all that bad - but, they do mess up on the bills more often than anywhere else I have ever been. Also, they lose reservations and for some reason say they are full when they aren't. The place isn't all that bad - just they don't seem to have a great handle on running it!

As for MY PERSONAL recommendations on where to stay... There is a house to rent there in one of the nearby sloughs.. Its awesome, I stayed there with Danny Peluso and Steve Hiyashi and it worked out fantastic. 2 bedrooms and a pull out in the living room.. right on the water - leave your boat on your dock - on a VERY SHORT idle to Konocti Vista!

Here is a link to his webpage

http://www.basscalendar.net/ourhome.asp

The rates are about the same for 3 rooms at KV Casino.. but, you get all the bonus amenities of a home - Full Kitchen - Dock - Barbeque, etc.. etc... Steve's a great guy and he only rents it to Fisherman.

Hey Tom, the tourney was good and I had a lot of fun fishing with all 3 of the (Pro's) people that I drew. The only thing that bugged me was the fact that I was in the middle of the field (boat #34,35&36) and we blasted off 1st flight and weighed in first flight both in the evening weigh-in(fri) and in the morning weigh-in sat. That took away 40 min. of fishing from me and gave an extra 40 minutes to the last flight. I am sure it was an honest mistake, but something that should be pointed out none the less. Other than that it was a great tourney , the BBQ was great, the people at Konocti Casino were great (from the desk girls to the security guards that watched our boats at night) and you guys did a good job with the limited help running it. Thanks again....

THere was some question on the flight deal... Let me clarify the thinking behind the flight situation.

3 flights is always odd to workout so we did the best we could. I was boat 30 so I was in the same situation you were! Here is how we looked at it. We graded/weighted each flight based on low light condition fishing.. meaning early morning being the best for AM flights - and last out in the evening session being the best. So we graded them A- Best B-Middle C-Worst launch orders.. and then made sure each of the flights (1, 2 and 3)

Fri AM.

A Flight 1
B Flight 2
C Flight 3

Fri PM
C Flight 2
B Flight 1
A Flight 3

Sat AM
A flight 2
B Flight 3
C Flight 1

Flight 1 (Boats 1 - 26) - they had the best flight in session 1, the middle flight in session 2, and the worst flight in session 3.

Flight 2 (Boats 27-52) - they had the middle flight in session 1, the worst flight in session 2 and the best flight in session 3.

Flight 3 (boats 53- 79) - they had the worst flight in session 1, the best flight in session 2 and the middle flight in session 3.

hope that explains it!

Hey, congrats on a pretty good series of weights and having the you know what to enter. I'm not there yet but the more I fish the more confidence I'm getting, logical of course, and can't wait to fish these big tourneys someday with you all.

Yeah, I taught a photo workshop in Carmel but it was the weekend before. I've talked the wife into letting me take 4 EXTENDED fishing trips a year to anywhere in California (usually Yuma/Colorado river, Sierras 4 trout or Delta/Clearlake- which is now my fav) this was trip # 2 for the year.

I hear the Delta in Sept. might be nice as it would not be so windy and less traffic- true? Maybe we could get together then. I tried to arrange a trip out with Bobby Barrack, whom my new mentor John Kerr told me about down here, but he's booked into December!!! Must be nice huh?

You did well on those frog fish, figuring so many during a tourney like that. Too bad the big one did not have better bearings. I seem to find the bigger they are the less likely they miss though, so that was unlucky buddy.

Glad a good time was had by all.
See ya.

I also was shorted 40 min. of fishing time, compared to the rest of the field, but I do see the logic behind it !, the only thing that messed me up, was the wrong flight was called sat. morning & I did not hear the my boat # called as the bullhorn was really weak ! , overall it was an awsome event! & I hope IT turns out to be a regular on the A/C scedule ! I had a blast!!......thanks Anglers Choice!!
