For all of you that tow with smaller vehicles please read
A friend of my fathers settled out of court with another party because he rear ended another vehicle while towing. His boat exceeded the maximum capacity for the vehicle and his lawyer told him to settle as he stood no chance in court.
I would rather jog home from my own Vasectomy than spend Saturday at the mall.

THanks!!!! Although always careful, i'll keep an extra longer distance behind vehicle in front of me.

Great advice . Years ago..I used to haul around a 28ft travel trailer / with two mx bikes in the bed to the races . Only problem was I drove a 6 cyl Toy 4x4. Under weight, way under braked . Young and silly . Charlie

Man, I've been wondering about this. I just got a big boat and my truck is not that huge.
Does this work:
Dodge Dakota (V8 Magnum) w/ class III hitch towing a 19ft Bayliner Capri? I'm thinkin I'm fine.....
Anyone?

I had a 318 v-8 in a 2 wheel drive dakota pick up truck. Wouldnt hold a transmission. I hope you got the 4x4. If not I have the name and number for every transmission shop from here to North Carolina. It took 3 rebuilds to get me to across the country.

OK suggesting one allows a little extra stopping distance when towing with a small truck is always good advice.
However, my Tacoma is rated to tow 5000 pounds and I have yet to see a bass boat package come close to that weight.
BTW, anytime anyone rear ends another vehicle they are ALWAYS going to be at fault. Regardless if they're are towing, not towing, or are towing something that exceeds the tow vehicles maximum ratings...... save for some extremely unusual set of circumstances..
Of course a lawyer would tell him had had no chance in court.. How would anyone try to defend that.... Maybe the lawyer was suggesting that not only was he at fault for rear ending the other guy, but he would be considered grossly negligent for exceeding the tow rating and would be subject to even more civil liability if he didn't settle quick.

Big Daddy is totally right on all points....
I'd say, get a bigger truck, or a smaller boat.

Many vehicles have aftermarket big brake kits. For some it might be an option if you can’t afford a new rig. Don’t forget that tow rigs should have their brakes checked a serviced much more frequently. $100 for premium pads is cheap insurance.

I know there's a number of truck driving experts that visit the site. You can't have more weight behind you, that's careless and dangerous. You're taking a risk that may get you or someone else hurt.
It only takes that fraction of a second when you realize your out of control and I don't care how good of a driver you think you are, you're at the mercy of gravity.
I understand the need to get out there and fish and I know we can't all go out and buy a new rig to match our boat. But when you do decide to take these risks, stack the odds in your favor. Stay way back, make sure your trailor brakes are operating correctly, and if conditions get nasty, pull to a safe spot and wait it out. I would hate to see an innocent child get hurt, as I'm sure you would too.
Those that don't know, I was part of the towing industry for 18 years. Not an expert, just seen a lot and trained a lot. Be careful out there.
