The Powell 703CB or the new 754CB glass rods. The 703CB would probably be the better all around rod, but the 754CB is a perfect rod for throwing deep cranks.

I agree with Cody, 703cb all around, 754cb deeper cranks. Great Rods. I hope Santa leaves one or two under the tree for me. 8)

Any old tree branch will work for cranking. Lots of treble hooks. :D seriously tho, when cranking they just hook themselves don't they? I just use a long limber rod for distance.

Actually Greg, these rods are built specifically for cranking - extra length to increase casting distance, enough backbone to work larger fish and a subtle enough tip to not rip the bait from the fishes mouth.

the 805CB is the true Howitzer in the line up. I never thought a 3/4 lipless could go that far.
take care of the tip.
my favorite LipLess rod.

I started ripping with it the other day, big rip baits.

ditto that! Sapp suggested it...

I used to throw crankbaits on lighter rods but Steve Sapp convinced me to go with a heavier rod and as much length as possible. That Dobyns rod Mike uses fits the application perfectly...especially on Clear Lake and the Delta where you might find yourself dealing with a serious fish on any cast.

My Current rod for Deep divers is great, never found it equal as far as I was concern....until I got to play with the 805cb....WOW!!!

Just a beautiful rod for DD

I know the Question was about a Powell...But do keep an open mind about the Dobyns 805 and 804.

I know you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I have a powell 702 cb glass rod. It is really light and is my favorite rod to use. I throw all my stacee 90's, pointers, and rattle traps on it. I also like the way it works with buzz baits and spinner baits. It in a mod fast and in parabolic enough so when a bass is sucking in your buzzbait, or whatever it really feeds it to them when the rod loads up. I have stuck bass to 8# on it and had no trouble getting them in. Its also a good spoon rod. I think some might say the 702 is to light, but I fish the delta with it no problem.

As far as versatility I would stick with a 7footer or maybe a 7'6.....

If you want to get down deep with a DD22 or other Deep Diver....I would throw the 805CB.....Another advantage to the 8 footer is that you can stick the 8 footer straight down into the water and gain an extra foot over the 7 footer as far as your crankin depth.

The 804 and 805 is all awesome for the Huddleston shad baits....

Thanks

To answer your question ... the Dobyns Rods are better. Gary designed both rods and he's now had over two years to tinker with his stuff and improve upon it anyway he can.

Just like in two more years, that generation of Dobyns Rods will be better yet. He's big, he talks plain and he comes across as really basic ... but the man is a freaking insanely fanatical savant when it comes to rod design and perfectionism in quality control.

I've personally played with rods that he's made and won't sell because they are not "up to his liking." (I.e. they aren't "perfect") I FREAKING LOVE THE RODS ... but Mr. Rod-O-Maniac won't allow them to be sold ... he does not sacrifice quality to make a buck.

If you want to throw big cranks far, go with the 804 or 805 ... but your question is for an "all around rod" and for that purpose, I'd buy the 705. It is awesome and costs the same as the Powell Rods.

Happy fishing!
