Favorite Old Bass Lure

Post by Greg_Cornish »

If anyone ever runs across a lure resembling this I'd love to hear about it. When I was a kid I bought a cheap plastic lure for about $1.19 at a local hardware store. It was a one piece molded plastic and it just killed the bass. I could stand beside anyone and catch more bass than them. I made the mistake of using it without a leader, in a lake heavily populated with Northern Pike. Bye bye. It was all black with two white skunk stripes down the back. It looked like this.

Looks like an old walleye plug, you got anything in that bunch of baits you posted last week that is roughly the same shape? Slap on some black anf white paint and you're in business!

A long black bait like that...maybe a leech imitator?!

Search ebay for vintage baits and you might come across something similar.

I'm only 23 so it might not be old to most of you guys but the first plastic worm I fell in love with was a motoroil colored Mann's Augertail worm. I only see em online now, been off the shelfs for a long time.

The augertail! When I was a kid I used to crush bass using that worm. I would rig it without weight and just slowly swim it. Funny you mentioned that worm because in the last 6 months I was thinking that fishing that worm weightless at Clear Lake in the spring would knock them dead.

Those baits ain't that old.

How about a wooden, "Christmas tree" Bomber 500? Or you could go yellow coach dog, or black/red. :D

How about a Sassy Worm? I used to pond fish with those when I was a kid. Clear blue 6" Texas rigged. People would laugh at that worm today. Back then is was a curly tail worm or sassy shad to probe the deeper water. A Tiny Torpedo, Chug Bug, or buzzbait for up top. Can't remember throwing anything else back then. I still have that Tiny Torpedo(K-mart) and Chug Bug(Longs Drug). Scary what I can remember, now if I could only remember important stuff. Wait this is the important stuff!!

I had this lure made by storm that was a shallow crank or odd shaped ripbait had a flat profile like a shad or blue gill it was chrome blue back and kicked some bass! I found them once in storms new packaging in Minnesota at a gander mountain that was 4 years ago and I dug this thing out of my grandpas tackle box i inherited so who knows how old mine was. I broke it on a 4lb fish (it was a old beat up lure) when I was probably 13 years old.

I have six of these lures. I found out the lure at the top of the post might be a knockoff of a Bagley Deep Diver Smoo. I got 5 bids going on ebay.

Christmas Tree Bomber 400 at Henshaw on the dam or a coach dog version at El Cap. Got a 7-14 walking the bank in the back on one of those back in '72. I still have it.

Oh Yeah! We are now officially old.

I think I actually may have a Chartreuse, yellow and black Smoo somewhere - I'll have to look for it.

I know there's probably a zillion of the them in existence, but a plain old shad Rat-L-Trap was the hot ticket when I started learning to bass fish.

Mepp's are inline.

The coolest old lure in my collection is a Heddon Zig Wag.

Its like an A.C. plug without the rubber tail. The hardware on it is unreal. It is a thing of beauty, never has hit the water, no cracks or splits. It gets me thinking about the fishing years ago. Like a time capsule or something.

I really started plugging with wooden Bombers. There were plastic plugs out then, but the bait shops around here had many wood baits in stock.

Won a Smoo on ebay today. Then found out this might be the lure I was looking for. Doesn't matter too much, they should work about the same.

If anyone wants to know something about their old tackle, you can contact me bwats@softcom.net and I will try to help. I have been collecting for 30 years or more and am a member of the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club. NFLCC.

There will be a fishing tackle, duck decoy and sporting collectibles show March 7 and 8 in Santa Rosa.

Nice spread on the 60's-70's era stuff. Looks like you did some good things with that perch 600 Bomber. How many of those baits cost 14 bucks new?

Warning: Don't be too quick to sell some of your stuff. The Storm Thin fins mentioned earlier are getting to be collectible and well as most all Bagleys. The early Bagleys with square bills and brass hardware are going for 75 bucks at times. The back East pros have rediscovered them and are bidding on EBAY to get them to fish with. LOL

I hang out at a Web site called Joe's Old Lures and do most of my buying there. Some of the Bass Pros like Bernie Schultz are on there all the time buying and selling.

Yep, my sap is rising as garage sale time gets going. Fish on Tues, Wed, Thur. and go lure hunting on the weekends.

Cooch,

Admit it, those are baits that came outta your boat. You bought them new and are still fishing with that ancient stuff. :D

I found my glass case, at the Galt flea market there were some guys making them. Glass shelves, wall mounted, and wood trim. Opened like a cabinet so you could move stuff around.

Things look much nicer behind glass.

I did put Corrosion X on some hooks that were fuzzy, and it worked great.

Got that right Cooch! I fished with Dave in my first big tournament I learned more from him in one day than I had taught myself up to that point in my fishing life. At any rate he was throwing them buggers around asked me if I had one and told me after I said Nope, never seen one outside a glass case that I NEEDED to get a couple to toss and told me to tie on a fairly deep diving crank bait and get to windin'!

Top right is a wooden Bomber, looks like a 500. The plastic Mudbug, bottom row, second from the right, was (as we like to say) a knockoff--but one with its own following.
