Jig head paint
Jig head paint
So I noticed the paint on one of my favorite jig heads has chipped off and was wondering of it really even matters. What do you all think? As long as the skirt is in tact and your favorite "creature" is added to it does it matter much if the jig head is painted or just leave it as lead.
Second, where would one go about getting paint to fix jig heads as such? Maybe its a mental edge knowing the baits looking like new but I'm thinking I'd like to paint it back up just in case. Thanks!

+1
You can get lots of different colors, they are easy to apply, and a jar of powder coat will last a long time. Also real nice to just buy bare jigheads and make 'em the way you want them.

Re: Jig head paint
Last year I had a streek going with a jig that had no paint on the underside only on top I would think man I need to tie on a new jig - but I knew there was something special about THAT jig so I fished it until it broke off. Sometimes it's the jig itself. heck for structure fishing not having paint on the bottom gives me a better feel and I think transimits more noise to the fish.

You can get them at many outlets, including BPS. I got some at Bass Pro, and some at Anglers Marine down here. I'm sure many of our site sponsors also carry them.
I just checked, and for reference Tackle Warehouse carries some:

Re: Jig head paint
It would be rather diffivult to apply powder coat paint to a jig that has already been tied..Truthfully the jig head being painted is more of an attraction to the fisherman than it probably is to the fish..I have known people that have repainted chipped or damaged jig heads, most of the time the new paint doesn't really last all that long..You can use any good acrylic paint or even fingernail polish to touch up your jig heads if you want to..

Re: Jig head paint
I do it all the time... just have to be sure to keep the skirt material away from the heat of course.mac (Doyle McEwen) wrote:It would be rather diffivult to apply powder coat paint to a jig that has already been tied..
Probably quite right, but I myself prefer to have the head match the skirt appearance rather than a shiny (or even dull) metalic surface, as I feel it is more subtle and less conspicuous under full daylight.Truthfully the jig head being painted is more of an attraction to the fisherman than it probably is to the fish..

Re: Jig head paint
I usually dont have this problem, i loose my jigs WAY before the paint starts falling off. haha. I doubt the chipped paint really matters, but if its bothering you, you can try to touch it up with some fingernail polish, spray paint then clear epoxy coat or try to use powder paint; but that might be tricky. Its hard to use in only a small area because once you get the jig hot enough for the powder to stick, you start melting and burning the existing paint. Gotta be careful with that. It might be easier to just chip off the rest of the paint and redip it. As mention above, the Pro-Tec paint is great. I buy all of mine through TJs Tackle. He has the best prices (can buy in bulk) and ships very quickly. http://www.tjstackle.com

I just dab the bare spots with a black Sharpie. It knocks down the shine and its black. Nothing in nature is perfect so a few black marks is not going to affect anything.

It only matters if it matters to you. I think you should fish the chipped ones for awhile and see what the fish have to say.

Re: Jig head paint
When I get bored and repaint any chips I have (not very often) I just use a sharpie. It works just fine for me and a lot less work than repainting with powder coat as well!

Re: Jig head paint
If you put alternate stripes or blotches on a bare jig head with different colored sharpies, and then clear over it with clear vinyl lure paint, the colors run and blend a little, and really come out great.
And it holds up well.
Contrasting colors are what catches a fish's attention.
Plus it's fun to make your own combinations.
No heat involved, so you can do jigs with shirts easier.
