What would you use if it was only One?
What would you use if it was only One?
When out fishing yesterday on the Delta with Tuneman the moderator and we had a real good day.
As we were talking I asked a question that I read in some magazine – if you had one lure for the whole year to use what would it be? So I thought more about this and was wondering what most of you would say.
But I wanted to modify the question a bit. So here it is:
If you had only one lure or bait (brand name and type) to use for next year (2009 from Jan to Dec) what would it be and the color of the lure? You get to use no other baits or lures. Let me clarify the question a bit, crankbait, ripbait, spinnerbaits, buzzbait, popper, lipless rattletrap, swimbait, Jig, poper, frog, worm, etc. Would it be sinking, suspending, floating, deep diving and what changes would you make to the bait or would you use it stock? List the weight, type of lip and how would you set it up (Texas Rig, Carolina Rig, Drop Shot) the line and poundage.
Now the best part of the question is why and what is your home water that his bait would be used on the most? Lets have some fishing fun.

Re: What would you use if it was only One?
I never really understand these types of questions because as an angler I have a host of lures and techniques that allow me to account for changing conditions out on the water.
With that said I would flip a oxblood beaver with a 3/16 or 1/4 weight on 15 pound test.
Second choice would be a 6 inch fat robo drop shot MMII on 8 or 10 pound test.

Re: What would you use if it was only One?
I would deffinately use a dep diving crank bait. Probably something like a Srike King Series 6. There is SO much you can do to a crank bait to modify it. And I chose the Deepest crankbait Stike King makes for one reason! I would sand down the lip of the bait so I can make it run shallower when needed, now I can cover all depths. If the time called for a wake baot or something on topwater, I would heat up the lip and bend it to a 90degree angle and shorten by sanding it down. Now you have a wake bait! If I was looking for a slower moveing bait, I can add suspend dots to it to make it do just that, suspend. Or you can get really tricky and cut off the lip completely, add an eye screw to the nose now you got a walk the dog kinda bait. The modifacation to a crank bait is only limited to ones imagination! Oh and the color would probably have to be "Sexy Shad"

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

What do you mean nice try, Guyle? Just trying to bring some excitement to the board that seems worried about the affairs of the world.
What are you laughing at Dan, you know you could use some advice too.
What I was trying to find out what single lure would be chosen for the whole year! Something like if they had a “Manufacture Tournamentâ€

Re: What would you use if it was only One?
I would use a huddleston shad, purple with a fall rate of 12, and I would use it on any of the lakes I fish.

3/8 oz arkie jig , brown with a baby paca craw in brown also on 16lb sugio floro line, pro cure crawfish super gel .
Re: What would you use if it was only One?
BERSERK BAITS 5/8 OZ SPINNERBAIT IN ONE OF THEIR 7 SHAD PATTERN COLORS. YOU CAN GET IT IN 1/4 OZ ALL THE WAY UP TO SPECIAL ORDER 1 OZ SIZES, BUT I PREFER THE 5/8 OZ ALL AROUND WEIGHT . WITH IT I CAN FISH SLOW, FAST, LET IT GO DEEP. SLOW ROLL IT. MATED WITH DOUBLE WILLOW BLADES IT HAS FLASH, YET VIBRATES ENOUGH TO DRAW STRIKES. TO ME IT IS THE ALL AROUND BAIT, WINTER , SUMMER, FALL OR SPRING. YOU CAN EVEN BED FISH WITH IT. TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT.

Re: What would you use if it was only One?
Snagproof BBP frog. I'll take the good with the bad. I've found I can get bites more and more when I'm "not supposed to". I guess It's true with any bait though... you for yourself to throw it you'll find a way to get bites. Then trim it up, a little hook bend, and pinch the lead into a keel. 65# pp.....
Re: What would you use if it was only One?
Marty,
Since you didn't indicate whether you're fishing specifically for black bass or are including other species (stripers, salmon, etc.). I would have to go with a 3/4 oz Diamond Dust Rat L Trap. My only upgrades to the lure would be changing the stock hooks and splitrings to 4x Owner hooks and heavier split rings.
In the Delta, I have caught 8 different species of fish on this specific lure.

If I only had one bait for all locations for the whole year it would have to be a jig.

Re: What would you use if it was only One?
Marty my BrothA - thanks again for the great day on the water, and the royal tour! That will certainly help get up and crawling out there on my new waters, as at least I have some idea what to watch out for now, and how to run it.
As I said that day, my choice would be a swimbait, sinking, as I'd rather throw a swimbait all day for days on end and finally get rewarded with a giant, than put on the skirt and chuck the fairy-wand all day for dinks! I'd probably make it a Hudd ROF 16, so that I could cover the entire column regardless of the conditions, or my new favorite the Orso sinking Split-tail as I can do a whole lot with that bait.
Second choice would be a jig, as I've seen the results and although I don't have a whole lot of experience with them yet (didn't have a lot of opportunities to use them down South) I know that they are fish-catching machines year 'round.
Of course, you didn't specify what was on the line If it was just a matter of fun-fishing, club-level tournaments, or big money on the line... that would certainly factor in to the decision.
Anyway, thanks again so much for the great day on the water - had a blast, and the fact that we even caught a bunch was a bonus!

A Delta craw speed trap....I'd drop shot that thing if that what was needed.

Re: What would you use if it was only One?
1/2 oz jig with living rubber. I can crawl it, hop it, swim it, flip it, fish it in open water or throw it into heavy cover and weed growth. If I was limited to one trailer it would be the Yamamoto Double Tail, in five inch, though a full size Brush Hog or Super Pork are close seconds.
My home waters are different. My local lake is heavily endowed with weed growth and heavy cover. The other lakes I frequent are Castaic, Piru, andother similiar water sheds with fairly clear water and plently of open water structure. A jig can cover both efficiently. It may not be the best bait for a particular day and time, but I can confidently fish a jig year round knowingthere is a decent chance I'll get bit.

Well, yeah... tunaman plays keyboards, as well as some brass instruments (although I haven't played a trumpet in many years)... got a Yamaha DX, a Triton, and a Kurzweil here at the house. Been playing since I was 8 years old, although I took a significant break for a while.
