Spooning -----

Post by set'em good »

Mono, Floro or braid, your opinions please..

Lost a "Big girl" spooning in 30 foot of water on 15lb big game Mono this weekend. I was wondering if there would have been a difference had I been using one of my rods with 30lb performance braid or floro..Type, size ?

Thanks,

Did you check your guides on the rod?

Did you have a ball bearing swivel on it to account for line twist :?:
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Ohh the line did not snap or break, she just came unbuttoned.
Which I guess could happen anyways but I was thinking that if I had floro or braid "with no stretch" I would had been able to set the hook better??? I set her good, she was solid for a good 30 seconds or so and then nothing...

3/4 oz Shorty "changed out with new Gami's and split ring"

i was spooning a couple weeks ago a t our local pond. i use braid with a floro leader. one problem . we were spooning at 60 ft . i set up hard on a big girl but with this much braid out with no stretch .. MY ROD EXPLODED INTO THREE PIECES.. i still prefer this setup when spooning deep because you don't lose too much stricking power.. but be careful too hard a set and you could lose a rod ??

I spoon allot and have learned to switch out my hooks on the Hopkins 3/4 oz shorty an 1 oz to a size1 hook . It does not affect the action and you have allot more meat to grab more lip. I did this because of sticking 4+ spots in the tree's requires you to yard them out. I also use 17 lb p-line fluorocarbon it seems to be all good with a good ball bearing swivel 12' to 16 " up the line.
