Safety/boating regs for a 14ft aluminum?
Can someone tell me what is required for a 14ft aluminum as far as safety and things I need so I dont get a ticket? I fish in salt and fresh and only fish durin days. I've talked to numerous people and each one told me different. As far as I know I think I need life vest, flare, horns, exstinguisher.....things I question is do I need running lights? and a round donut bouy with a rope connected to it?. Thanks guys

Federal Requirements for a 14' reational vessel:
-State Registration (paperwork)
-Vessel Numbering (your CF #'s)
-USCG Approved PFD's - one type I, II, III,V for each person on board - you boat is not large enough to require a type IV throwable PFD, (I would recommend one, just the floating square cushion, not a life ring)
-Visual Distress Signals - one battery operated light or 3 day/night red flares (get the flares, they're like $25 for a pack of four)
-Fire Extinguisher - don't read the "minumum regs" get a ABC-1, then you are covered for any crazy mishap)
Sound Producing Device - just get little plastic whistles and attach them to all of your life vests, then you're never without (and in the off chance you have a man overboard at night, they will be glad to have that whistle)
Apart from this, I don't think CA has any further requirements. If you have the space and budget, overdo it on the safety equip, becasue on the off chance you forget something and get boarded, if you're able to show you are a prepared and consciencious boater and not just some jerk with a boat, they will be a little more lenient.

PETE,
I have been just a little tempted to sell the monark and get a 17' whaler.... But I'd loose my pants on that boat!
the report sounds good!

Dan the Cabby was 24inches...and the variety of rocks were your average. Didnt see anything too big. All caught on P-Line Diamond bars. Wish I got to see a Ling tho. And Steve...you should sell the monark cause you already got a bass boat. A Whaler would complete the fishing toy package lol.

What I found to be the best added item was a tool box with various screws and nuts, electrical wire, tie wire, ty-wraps, duct tape, tools including metric wrenches and spark plug wrench, fuses, and electrical tape. This saved my butt a couple of times.
