Loomis Frog Rods

Post by Zedonis »

I am looking for advice on the Loomis frog rod before making the purchase. Seems like it might be rated a bit light (10 to 20lb) for the Delta and Clear Lake. If your gonna fish 50lb braid will this hold up?
What are your experiences, good and bad.

Thanks

I bought the Loomis frog rod because I thought it was very "beefy" and could handle any size Bucketmouth in the muck. And it handled it just fine, but if your throwing a frog all day long on that rod, yer gonna get tired. I sold my frog rod and went back to my MBR 845 GL3. It can handle anything the frog rod can handle and is not so BIG to work a frog all day. As a matter of fact,,, I bought anoother MBR 845 GL3 to have as a back up. I wish Loomis would make that 845 in a GLX version. Just my 2 cents.

ps. the loomis frog rod works great for throwing punkers.

I had one, and after a couple full days of fishin it I decided it wasen't for me. It hooks up fine and has pleanty of power, its just not comfortable to fish all day.
I got a powell frog rod and am happy with it!

Current frog rod (FGR863C) is pretty beefy considering it is a '3' power.

A lot of people, myself included, did not like this rod. To me, it felt
'lifeless'. It was heavy. If you would like to buy a GLoomis, do yourself a favor & wait for the new frog rods to come out. I would not recommend that anyone buy the FGR863C.

If you can't wait, I have heard good things about using the BCR875 as a heavy cover frog stick. Here is the info on it from the GLoomis site.

BTW, I use a Dobyns 735 as my dedicated frog rod.

gloomis cant make frog rods. period. I was using a powell flipping stick last year for frogging and that was better than the gloomis. lol.

Here's some info that may be helpful on the two new frog rods that will be coming out shortly. I've used both and can say that I've never used a better frog rod in my life. Don't listen to me though, go just look at one at any of the Loomis retailers and you'll see for yourself. They've really got something goin' with these two rods:

We have totally redesigned the frog rod line-up with two new, ultra-powerful specialty rods designed for topwater frog fishing. We’ve not only improved the action, but reduced the weight of these rods substantially. There’s a 7’ 9â€

If you want an expensive broom stick buy the Loomis. If you want a real frog rod call me. $200.00 and built your way.

Grab a GL3 MBR 845. You won't be sorry. My friends and I have been using this rod to throw frogs with no issues. It is light enough where it can be used all day, and it is strong enough where you can pull big fish from the thick stuff. Also the tip allows you to work the frog and make accurate casts.

Give it a try

Been using the BCR 875 GLX for frogging for several years. Rod is light, strong and very balanced with a Curado E. It doesn't tire you out or strain your wrist.
