lure wieght

Post by meach »

my rod lure rating states the max size is 3/8, would fishing with a 1/2 oz lure be damaging to the sensetivity of my rod?

i have a few spro frog jr's that i like to toss out, i was worried that if i switched back to my trigged wieghtless plastics after using the heavier lure that it could end up resulting in losing some of its senesitivity..

a good question, I don't know either.

In trolling for trout with flashers and lures it is easy to put to much stuff, and you miss the bite and wind up walter skiing a trout for 20 minutes...Also on high end rods like my 704cb glass dobyn's rods It can be fantastic on lighter or medium lures and still toss bigger lures...but something changes and the action is ....not spoiled... but just less.

I think there is alot of variablity in rods and there descriptions, Ultimately you or somebody who has your specific rod will have to offer an opinion.

WHen I posted This new post wasn't available....I thought you were asking if having an oversized lure would sacrifice performance, but this post sounds like your worried that the rod might be damaged somehow. The rod will not be damaged by tossing a heavy lure...specially not one so close to correct weight anyway. you will need to adjust your drag though each time you change a lure.

Very few bass rods are rated as low as 3/8 max lure weight. A few 1 power spinning rods designed for 6 lb line and tiny finesse lures, like a light action trout rod; 1/16oz -3/8 oz lures.
You may break the rods upper 1/3rd section trying to cast lures heavier than the rod is designed for, other than that getting a hook set in a bass could be interesting.

maybe, but a medium action 6'8" rod sounds more like a teaser rod....like senkos or maybe shakey head stuff....doesnt sound like a wispy XL-XF for drop shot.

Also the total overweight is only 1/8 oz....4/8 vs. 3/8ths.

shimano's website recommends the rod for :
Split shot, Shakey head, and 1/6 to 3/16 oz. Texas rig rod.
and lure wieght of 1/8 to 3/8
I am trying to make an educated descison as i will be using the rod for some top water applications using 1/2 buzz baits, or 1/2 frogs...
if it will be a risk doing so, i suppose i could buy a med heavy ugly stick just for my top water ventures

Didn't see this; 1/16 to 3/16 oz lures, medium action spinning rod.
Good luck.

I think that this rod isnt designed for frogs...and while a 1/4 oz buzzbait is possible....a doubt a 1/2oz would be a good idea.

If that rod is designed for shakey head and the like then the action would be too fast for top water applictions anyway.Don't do it.

there are times where i am limited to just being able to bring one rod, and i am leaning towards that model but if i am limited to just one rod at times id like to be able to use mulitple applications, not just limited to worming or drop shotting, i guess the better question would be can that specific model handle mulitple applications, or am i better off looking at something else?

This cumara CUS68M seems equivalant to my 6'8" M-XF avid st. croix which I used to use for shakey head(jig and worm).

an St. Croix Avid Casting rod M-F is a nice multi-purpose rod. It can do spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jigs, and small topwaters like spooks or 1/4 oz buzzbaits, and I think its a good senko rod too.

ive just purchased the stradic c14 and looking for a good pairing for it..and i know if i go to a MH rod i will lose alot of sensetivity when i am worming...its kinda of difficult since i am kinda strapped for cash this year that i only have one choice for a top shelf rod to pair w my new reel..i really do appreciate all the input

Try Dobyn's 703SF
7' 1pc.
8-17lb,
3/16-5/8oz,
Medium Fast Action

Jigs, Texas Rigs, Senkos, Shaky Heads

MSRP $229.99

There are alot of different techniques, but for a multipurpose rod this is as close as I know of....but again St. Croix has some nice stuff too..and a bit cheaper.

Your question about lure weight has been answered; don't exceed the rod makers recommended max weight, they know thier rods.
If you are looking for a general use bass spinning rod, then look at rods rated 3 to 4 power, med/hvy-fast action, 3/16 to 1/2 oz lures, 6 to 15 lb line, you should have a lot a good choices ranging from under $100 to over $400.
Whatever you decide to buy, pick it up first and put a reel , line, plus casting plug and try it out. At the end of the day, it's your rod to fish with.

I have been out muscled by fish on a lighter action rod. Lite OK for drop shot, I use a Dobbins 703MH fast tip action for this. Setup with 8lb. Fluro Carbon. Use a little heftier rod (Powell - don't remember the number) for my Buzz baits & top water. Still remember good fish that beat me up - buzz bait on light action rod. My 2 cents worth.
3/4 of the Earth's surface is water and 1/4 is land. Clearly god wants me to fish, not mow the lawn.

For what your doing and since your on a budget, I would get a 6'6" MH Bass Pro Extreme rod 8- 17lb line to do what your looking for.
Do your homework. Read up on Rod specs and applications for that rod.
Remember you get what u pay for so upgrade to a Powell or Dobyns when u can afford it and you will feel the difference.

my 02 cents...

Good luck,
Kap

I agree with Kapp on this a MH 7' spinning rod can serve MANY dual purposes. I know when I was fishing from the back of the boat and still to this day my MH is a work horse for me. I also ended up getting a M and ML spinning rod for the times that I knew I would be split shotting or throwing micro light lures.
