Dobyn's 701 vs. 702 for drop shotting.

Post by acm95301 »

I'm currently using a St. Croix Avid 6'9" ML-XF for drop shotting, and it does a fine job, but I hoping to find an upgrade.

I'm looking at the Dobyn's rods, I've recently purchased several that I'm very happy with and am debating whether the 701 or 702 would be the way to go for a drop shot rod....Also I have been using a spinning rod, but I know that some prefer casting rods.....the only advantage I can think of is a spiining rod can allow a bait to fall straight down easier than a casting rod and that casting has less line twist..what are your thoughts?

You would actually be very happy with either model, it depends on the power rating you are comfortable with. I use the 703C (casting) on the Delta and all inland lakes and the performance of the rod is second to none. I manually peel line off and the bait falls just fine...
The 702SF spinning rod in my opinion would probably work for whatever drop shotting you would want to do.

I would say go with the DX 702. I have it in both the Casting and Spinning rods. They both have their advantages. If you are fishing shallow 1-10 or 15 ft. of water go with the casting rod. If you are fishing deep, 15ft and deeper go with the spinning rod. You just gotta look at the average depth you fish. If deeper or on a vertical presentation use the spinning simply because as you said your self, the bait falls straighter on spinning rods. If your primarily shallow and flipping or pitching go casting as its easier with the casting rods. It also make a great shakey head and flick shake rod, and I would assume a good dart head rod as well. Just my .02 I hope this helps!

Please stay tuned there my friend. I just returned Friday from a very successful trip to the Midwest. Dang some of those areas are COLD!! Met some GREAT guys on the trip.

For very light dropshotting the 701 is awesome. If your a 5lb. test guy, you'll love this rod. The 702 is more versitile overall. Both models feel and fish AWESOME.

You can cast a really light bait with the 701, and it has plenty of back bone.
I use it for light dart heads, split shot, and drop shot, and it's great.

St. Croix Avid is a sweet rod. So there is not much of a upgrade.

acm, Here is a little twist on a drop shot rod. For areas that I know have big largemouth I like to use the DX782 SF 7'8". To me this med-light rod is a awesome drop shot rod. And I like the lift I get with the longer length when reel stetting the hook for largies. As for the DX702, it is one of if not the best rod I have ever owned and there is no way you can go wrong with it. GB..Jim

Hi, this is Bob Myskey and I guide full time on Clear Lake. I use the 701 sf in both the Champion and Extreme series for my customers. I can tell you that both my customers and myself ""Love"' the feel of the 701sf and that this rod has plenty of back bone to handle a big fish. I have had customers bring 9 to 10 pounders to the boat using the 701sf. No doubt the 702 is a little beefer, but you can't beat the ""Feel"" and the detection of a ""light"" bite that the 701sf gives you. I personally rig the reels up with 20lb power pro braid, then use a Seaguar fluorocarbon leader in either 12, 10, or 8lb test depending upon water clarity. Normally it's 12lb test. Since I don't fish when I am out with my customers, it is critical that I give them the best rod possible and the lightest rod possible to detect the bites and believe me, these fish on Clear Lake have not been sending much of a signal when they pick up the bait. The rod plus the combination of the braid and leader is hard to beat.
Feel free to call me or e mail me with any questions regarding the Dobyn's rods, my customers can be rough on gear and these rods have stood up to the test. My info can be found at

Anyway, what rod did you end up with?

Good luck!

Its been a hard decison, I got to try a 703sf and 701 so far....I may need all three eventually..lol.

So far, I'm still using the St. Croix Avid ML-XF AVS68MLXF.

Before February I'll probably buy the 702 first, and hopefully get my AVS69MXF fixed.

But I'll Love Dobyn's so the 701 and 703 won't be far behind.

The Idea of the 782 is interesting, but I haven't found one to look at yet.

I'm getting a gen. 1 dobyn 702 on saturday.

But, I have room for more rods, so thanks for all the recommendations.

I still like the idea of the longer 2 power blanks for drop shot.
