Yo, Minnkotaman!

Post by tunaman »

Look who finally got a chance to install his new mount! While I was waiting for Todd and Mona to show up last week, I finally got the time to install the Fortrex retrofit you did for me!

I haven't had a chance to take it out on the water, but it installed easily and tested out great... can't wait!

Thanks again for the killer conversion Jim! Hope you enjoyed your time as a BASS Marshall?

Excellent choice Guyle... love the mount, but since I had recent motors I didn't want to shell out the cash for a whole new motor. This was the best solution, as it adapted my current 101 and integrated the new Fortex mount and bracket system. Very cost-effective solution.

looks good Rog. Keep an eye on that pull cord. I had to cut and adjust mine a few times as it was getting freyed with constant use.

Just a note on the position of the blade...

Post by scottsweet »

Great Roger! You will LOVE your new mount. I have had my new motor since they came out.

Key thing folks, you should store your Minnkota trolling motor with the blade facing in rather than out. If you look at the pedal in one of Roger's pics, you will see that that the pedal is at the end of its throw.

This is important when you are running as it can put undo stress on the trolling motor head (top). Some of you may have heard stories of the parts in the head breaking inside and this is one of the reasons.

For those with Motorguide, the blade should be facing out. For the same reasons.

Accordingly, you should run your transducer cable, if you have one, on the top of the shaft based on the trolling motor blade facing the proper way. This is very important because anything banging on the transducer cable reduces it's life and perhaps permanently damaging it.

Regarding this..there are a couple things I do to reduce this...

Whenever I am going to run, I always wrap my cord clockwise starting back to front. This way when I am running, the wind is blowing the handle to make the cord tighter rather than the other way around.

You will find that the cable on the Fortrex mount doesn't hang up quite as much as the old Maxxum mount when you pull it. Also, when it locks, either up or down, it is really locked and the motor isn't going to bounce around as much. Further, the yoke, the part that holds the shaft in the center (thing shaped like a U), is much stronger and won't shift left and right like the yoke of the Maxxum mount.

Looks good. What's MinnKotaMan's price to convert a 101Maxxum?

Are you saying that the peddle, should be at the end of it throw or not?
Not sure what you meant was his right or wrong in the pic.?

roger has his wrong. the prop should be in board.
that levels out the pedal and reduces the chance
of breaking up the cap.

Although that is the way I was told to store it when I got the boat, and my Ranger cover is designed for the prop to be on the outside.

The head can be adjusted to relieve any strain on the cables... I've been storing it this way since I first brought her home, and it has worked just fine for nearly four years.

I also double-checked the pictures I took the day I took posession, and it was certainly stored on the outside.

I'll have to give Jordan a call and get the skinny... maybe try it the other way and see how it stores with the cover on.

Thanks for bringing this up.

Roger
