1 year old gas

Post by rexford »

My boat has been sitting for a year without additives.
I live in california and have a 2000 carbureted engine.
Should I change out the gas or just run it?

Thanks,
Mike

How much gas is in it? Was the tank full or ?

If you can drain it, it would be better. It will probably run, just not too well until you use it up.

There is probably 10 gallons in there. I was just going to top
it off and run it as disposing of 10 gallons of questionable gas
is a headache. Just wanted some guidance. Appreciate yours!

Thanks,

Bass boat I presume?...I would fill it with Premium to balance the octane. But be sure to run it to empty before putting in new gas. You may also have some water in the fuel. You might want to put some fuel conditioner in too.

The proper way...is to empty it and clean out the carbs.

Drain the carb bowls and take out and clean the jets. You should pump out the old gas to be on the safe side.

My old boat sat for a couple years with half a tank and it ran no problem.

You are asking for trouble if you run it. Chances are your carbs are already gummed up. Pump the old fuel into your vehicle, drain all the lines and carbs. Clean the carbs. Replace fuel filter and water seperator. Add fresh gas and take it easy for while before you stomp on it. This will be cheaper than a new power head. Up to you though.
