Going "DOWNTOWN" for Sacramento River Bass

SACRAMENTO, CA. – It’s all coming down to the wire in late October for anglers participating in the last event of the 2015 Coors Light Future Pro Tour season, dubbed the “Capitol City Showdown”, as a large field of the best amateur anglers in the west make their way “downtown” to the Sacramento River, to take on the legions of small mouth bass that populate it’s banks, and contend with the many miles of winding levies that hide productive structure.

The word on the street from those pre-fishing for this event is that “there are fish everywhere”, ranging from 6 to 16 inches, making it fun - but at times, frustrating.

But don’t be misled.

The Sacramento River is literally loaded - up and down it's banks with quality smallmouth, spotted and largemouth bass that, if found, could be the difference between a “middle of the pack” finish or placing in the top five.

The "wildcard" for this event as it were, is that no team will be able to claim the "home water" advantage, as the Sacramento river is rarely highlighted on tournament trail schedules, receiving very little pressure, thus creating as even of a playing field as you can get.

To add to the challenge, anglers will be required to stay within the confines of the Sacramento River system, as outlets leading to the lower delta areas will be off limits, requiring competitors to learn how to fish a true "river" system.

"Dogfight" brews for 2015 Coors Light Silver Bullet AOY/Navionics Cup titles

For some, this event is all about doing well enough to make it to the "Big Show" - the three-day qualifying championship dubbed the Coors Light Future Pro Tour Classic, to be held in March of 2016 on Oroville Lake and Bullards Bar, where the keys to a new Ranger Z118 with Evirude package will be awarded to the winning team - along with a $25,000 cash bounty for the angler that catches a world-record spotted bass.

But for a select few, it will only be about trying to capture the prestigious Coors Light “Silver Bullet” Angler of the Year, and Navionics Cup titles, that carry with them cash bonuses, as well as fuel cards for the winners.

Long-time FPT anglers Cliff and Colby King have been on a tear this year, and hold the top spot - but only by a slight margin, as powerhouse teams Mike Caddick/Doug Gregory, and "Sugar" Shane Peirson/Austin Wilson, holding 2nd and 3rd place respectively, loom in the shadows, poised and ready to shatter any dreams Cliff and Colby may have of being the 2015 Coors Light Angler’s of the Year.

Alan Fong is an EXPERT on Sac River bassin

The Future Pro Tour never places a challenge in front of it's anglers without offering them some way of obtaining the information needed for success.

To that end, Alan Fong, General Manager of Fisherman's Warehouse - Sacramento, in conjunction with Sportsman's University, will host a class at Fisherman's Warehouse - Sacramento, on Thursday, Oct 15th at 6pm, titled:

"How to EFFECTIVELY fish the Sac River for Bass"

Alan, a firm believer that anglers will never grow into seasoned pros until they are faced with and deal with real challenges, has been fishing the Sac River since his high school days, and has forgotten more than most people know about the river.

Some of the topics Alan will cover are:

Tides - Are there tidal considerations for Sac River?
Continuous current - How river bass position in fast currents to feed
Productive areas - What parts of the river are the best?
Bait Choices - Colors/Size for the right application

And much, much more!

Stay tuned everybody…the race for the Coors Light FPT Classic and Angler of the Year titles ain’t over by a long shot…and is way too close to call!

So come on down to the "Capitol City Showdown" happening Saturday, Oct 24th in downtown Sacramento at Discovery Park, and help us close out what has been a truly great season!

See you all there!
