On 9/22/18, one hundred determined kayak anglers hit the legendary California Delta for the final KBF Trail Series event (in partnership with Yak-A-Bass) of the season. Weather conditions shaped up nicely with highs in the 90s and a light breeze for most of the day. It was an open launch meaning anglers can choose where to launch but must check in at the Westgate Landing Regional Park by 3:30 pm.

Anglers reported catching good numbers of small fish, but the better ones were hard to find. The key was locating areas with healthy grass and current. The primary fish-catching lures were: spinnerbaits, bladed jigs, crankbaits, jigs, and senkos.

Ultimately, Gino Quizon of San Diego, CA was able to find the big ones and was crowned the 2018 Delta KBF Trail Series Champion with a five fish limit of 88.25 inches and a 21.25-inch big fish. Gino is new to the kayak fishing scene but not new to fishing. Gino grew up in Florida where he was an avid saltwater fisherman from a young age. He relocated to San Diego with the United States Marine Corps where he serves as a drill instructor training and mentoring new recruits. This is his first season on the competitive kayak fishing scene and he is already experiencing some success. This is his second KBF win with his first coming on Lower Otay in San Diego in July.

Gino reported that he started his day launching out of River’s End Marina where he had located some productive water during his first visit to the Delta to do some pre-fishing in August. He started out with a bladed jig but was unable to get bit. He then picked up a 6-inch Senko in #208 and landed two nice fish. After four hours with only two bites, he decided to pack up and head to Windmill Cove to see if he could find some more productive water. His instincts were spot-on. Gino found a nice school of fish in Fourteen Mile Slough. The fish were approximately eight feet off the bank in ten feet of water. He reported that his Lowrance Elite-7 Ti with TotalScan was the key to locating those fish. He caught two on a Strike King 5XD crankbait in chartreuse / blue back. He then picked up one on a jig and then one more with the wacky 6-inch senko that turned out to be his biggest fish of the day.
