On Saturday, 10/27/18, nineteen dedicated kayak anglers hit San Diego’s Lake Murray for the final regular-season event of the So Cal Kayak Angler circuit. The weather was mild and in the 70’s but the bite was tough with only 8 anglers landing a five fish limit. When the scores were tallied, Steve Beuchner, a local favorite was crowned champion with a total of 77.25 inches including the 19.25-inch big fish of the event. Steve reported that he has many years fishing this small local lake (171 acres at full capacity) and his experience paid off. The Yamamoto Senko was his weapon of choice in green pumpkin which he reports is his favorite color. He fished the 5-inch slim Senko wacky on the outside edge of the tulles until he ran out. He then switched to 5-inch full-size Senko Texas rigged and he picked up his big fish in a pocket in the tulles. He reported that as soon as it hit the water, he saw his line take off, jumped a few times, and ultimately ended up on the board. For the win and big fish award, he took home $260, not bad for a day’s work on the water! In a close second was Gino Quizon who was reported to be fishing a Roboworm in Margarita Mutilator on the drop shot in 20 feet of water on the outside edge of the tulles. Coming in third place was Evan Morgeson who was reported to be throwing a crankbait in 15 to 20 feet on the ledges adjacent to the weed lines.
