The Motherlode Kayak Angler (MKA) Summer Splash Open kayak fishing tournament was held on Lake McClure located in Mariposa County in the Sierra foothills on Sunday, 6/2/19. This lake is known for large numbers of hard-fighting, drag-screaming spotted bass. 59 anglers came out to enjoy some beautiful weather, great company, and some friendly competition.
The Summer Splash event offered several different categories to include: Open Division (pedals and motors), Paddlers Division (paddles only), Womens Division, Masters Division (age 50 plus), and Legends Division (age 65 plus). In addition to these categories there were awards for Smallest Limit, Big Fish, and Overall Champion. When anglers came off the water they were treated to a BBQ and a casting contest for some great prizes.
Anglers reported that the fishing was tougher than expected. Many found good numbers of fish but the bigger ones were hard to come by. Veteran kayak angler James Pratt of Colfax, CA was able to find the right fish and secured the winning limit of 50 inches for 3 fish anchored by a solid 18-incher. James reported that he targeted the main lake and found fish shallow early in shad boils. Later, when the shad boils disappeared he targeted the same fish but with a dropshot since they had moved out to 15 to 18 feet of water. His primary bait was a 4 inch fluke that closely matched the bait fish.
