On Saturday, 6/22/19 the 2019 Motherlode Kayak Angler (MKA) Motherlode Series wrapped up their series with the MKA Classic hosted at Kelsey Bass Ranch in Snelling, CA. 15 anglers qualified to fish the final event of the season in hopes of taking home to the 2019 MKA Classic title. Anglers earned their berth through the three qualifier events fished on Lake McClure, Lake Don Pedro and Lake Tulloch. Lake McClure Champion John Myers and Lake Don Pedro Champion Josh Martinez earned their spots by winning an event and fishing the entire circuit. The other 13 anglers earned their spots from their point totals after the 3 qualifier events. Ultimately, the field consisted of some of the best kayak anglers in California.

The conditions were just right with the lake being full, good water clarity, a ton of vegetation and a water temp of 78 degrees. Before the tournament began the chatter was it was going to take a big limit to win. Last year it took 63 inches (Jacob Traba) and many were predicting that this year it would take more. Their predictions came true when Kong Yang of Fresno, CA checked in a 3 fish limit totaling 64.5 inches anchored by a 23 inch lunker.
Yang (2019 MKA Angler of The Year) reported that he caught a good one early on a bluegill pattern swim jig. He then went to work with a 5” Senko on pound fluorocarbon line on a spinning rod. He was casting to off shore weed beds, letting it fall and they would pick it up (including his 23” big fish).

The day came to a close with a tri-tip BBQ, awards ceremony and then some fun fishing after. This season would not have been possible without all the support of the anglers, their families and the generous support of the sponsors. We would like to thank everyone who came out and fished or supported the circuit in one way or another.
