Water Expected to Flow into Lake Oroville Emergency
Spillway Soon
Oroville, Calif. -- Lake Oroville is expected to rise this morning to the level that allows water to flow down
an emergency spillway and into the Feather River, according to the California Department of Water
Resources (DWR). The volume of water is expected to pose no flood threat downstream and should
remain well within the capacity of the Feather River and other channels to handle. Oroville Dam itself
remains safe, and there is no imminent threat to the public.
The emergency spillway has not been used since the dam was finished in 1968, but DWR has anticipated

OROVILLE, Calif. (KCRA) —
Water has begun to slowly flow over the Oroville Dam emergency spillway Saturday morning as Lake Oroville has reached full capacity and water outflows by way of the damaged spillway have decreased.
Although inflows decreased Friday and into Saturday morning to 89,000 cubic feet per second, water officials have also decreased outflows to 55,100 cfs, according to KCRA chief meteorologist Mark Finan.

Guess the spillway is not the scary part, it's the emergency spillway that's so close to the 1,700' long, 30' deep concrete wall failing. This would allow BILLIONS of gallons to spill in short order.
New article from the Merc. news says warnings had been ignored for over a decade:
