Meeting Lake Oroville spillway rebuild deadline only a first step
The news that repairs to the severely damaged Lake Oroville spillway won’t be finished by Nov. 1 wasn’t news to anyone who has been paying attention.
But, for those who don’t pay close attention, we felt a need to clarify. It’s easy to get confused when the state Department of Water Resources says work is on track to be completed by Nov. 1.
In updates for media that take place at least twice a month, DWR makes this point first in press releases: “Construction efforts … remain focused on repairing and reconstructing the gated flood control spillway, also known as the main spillway, by Nov. 1. DWR and its partners are on schedule.”
Then you get headlines from multiple media outlets that say “Spillway construction on schedule” and “Crews confident as deadline approaches.”
And you get reports like this earlier this month from a Sacramento TV station: “With two months until the expected completion date of the Oroville spillway, officials are confident the work will get done.”
