We finally got our motor back! As for today, it was epic!

We got on the water around 7 in the morning. The tide was still coming in, but was scheduled to change soon. A perfect breeze blew on the water.

We made a run to an exposed sandbar. Going with the current, we threw our white swimbaits. After roughly, an hour of no bites, it was clear the stripers were not in the area. We made a move to another flat with birds circling the area. This is always a good sign. Sure enough, we hooked up on a couple decent stripers. Nothing big, but enough to put a bend in the rod. Then, the bigger fish started to feed. Casting to the ledge, I hooked into a good one. She slammed the swimbait! She ripped some drag, but I was able to turn her. Got her in the boat and continued. About ten minutes later, my father hooks into another beast. His reel was screaming, and his rod was doubled over. After a tense battle, we had another brute in the boat.

With the fishing so good, we decided to go back through the area. We had some luck, but nothing like the ones we had landed earlier. Then I started to miss a ton of fish. For some reason, the fish were just slapping my swimbait. I pulled out my chatterbait rod and put on a large crankbait. I was hoping to land those short strikers, but had a shred of doubt in the back of my head. I was a little tense about throwing lighter line for these fish. Sure enough, I hook a giant, and I MEAN GIANT! The fish rose and shook her head violently. This was by far the biggest striper I have hooked on a lure. I attempted to move her to deeper water, but when fish is that big, they don’t listen to commands so well. She made a beeline to a weed patch, but I was fortunate enough to get her to swim through the trough. This is where my luck ended. As I gained some line on her, she took off into a large weedline. I barked at my father to clear the line, but I could see the fish was already a good 10 feet into the weedline. Then the line went slack, the fish broke 16-pound floro. My heart sank, this fish was easily over 25-pounds.

We continued fishing, finding more good stripers, but nothing huge. We even stumbled upon a school of bass. With repeated casts to a weed point, we pulled out a limit of fish within 10 minutes. They are far from big fish, but they were all fat and healthy fish.

By 3 in the afternoon, we called it a day. It was pretty epic today. I just wish I could have landed that brute, but that’s fishing for ya, can’t win every battle.

Notes

Finding the birds was key to finding the fish.

The fish are schooled, both bass and stripers. Don't be afraid to cast in the same area if you caught a fish. You may surprise yourself.

White swimbaits did all of our damage today

That’s what I did Sunday also. Bass after Bass. But not 1 striper. Fished flats , current, ledges. Swimbaited and rattletrapped only blacks. 2 to 4 lbs. saw one guy lose a giant also. Gotta luv the delta.
