Unfortunately, it happens fairly often on the delta. It’s happened to me a handful of times, the same kind of deal, I don’t think I was the target but I could here the bullets and see the impact on the water/bank. It’s a scary feeling to not be able to protect yourself if needed. I didn’t know the law about being able to carry a firearm while fishing. I’m able to carry a pistol on me? Can I open carry it on my hip?

Yah its not the first time its happened to me out there as well.
and yes you can carry it on your person.

There is a California Penal Code law that allows anglers to carry a gun while fishing and while hiking to and from their angling site. California Penal Code, section 12025 prohibits carrying concealed firearms in California, however, section 12027 provides the following exemption to this prohibition: “Licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing expedition.” Remember that some areas that allow fishing, such as state and national parks, and some incorporated areas where fishing is allowed prohibit the possession of any firearm. Make sure to check on the local laws where you plan to fish. The California Bureau of Firearms in the Department of Justice posts a summary of

Way back in the day I used to take my 8 year old daughter fishing on the Delta and I found it necessary to put a revolver under my boat seat. I only did it a few times and mainly because we were arriving so early in the morning, in the dark at the launch ramp. I remember getting nervous on some foggy mornings during duck season on Franks Tract.

it's that time of the year guys where hunters and fishermen are sharing the water and the land. Hell i've been there with guys shoot at geese a mile up with shotguns and seeing the BB's drop around the water way - idiots. Hell ive also been in a groove flippin only to be startled by guys in a blind that were exactly thrilled with my location. There is plenty of river and waterways to allow the hunters to hunt and yes they should be mindful of their shot. Nice Video Caleb!

Shotgun pellets raining down on me has never bothered me. It is the idiots that shoot the birds flying on the deck that suck.

I’ve had this happen 3 times near that same area a few years back. Hell one time we were right by where you launched at king island. Another fun encounter was up in snodgrass with my wife when someone decided to target shoot at the levee with something fully auto in probably 9mm. I always carry on the delta, not for the above reasons as most of these guys have no idea you are there or what they are doing. Bullets have no names, we got outta there in a hurry. When you hear the buzz before the shot...it’s time to leave!!!

This also happened to me many years ago on the main san joaquin river by bethel island on the east bank. Bullets repeatedly ricocheting of the rocks.

They think it is funny. Could have been easily killed.
