Many of the invasive species in major estuaries (such as San Francisco Bay) arrived through ballast water or attached to exterior surfaces of ships.

This is known as "biofouling." Vessel biofouling organisms include barnacles, algae, mussels, worms, crabs and small crustaceans.

CDFW’s Marine Invasive Species Program and the State Lands Commission work together to prevent the introduction of invasive species through this pathway. During California Invasive Species Action Week, take the time to learn more.
