LAKEPORT — Lakeport’s downtown was crowded with protesters driving in a caravan of trucks hauling boats during an anti-coronavirus lockdown rally in the county seat Friday.

In conjunction with protests around California and the country calling for lawmakers and public health officials to relax restrictions meant to slow the spread of coronavirus, a group of Lake County residents frustrated by the closure of Clear Lake to some types of fishing and boating activity took to the streets, calling on county leaders to reopen the lake.

“The lake is the big firewall,” said Kevin Ahajanian, one of several organizers of the protest and, until recently, a county supervisor candidate (Ahajanian affirmed that the rally bore no relation to his campaign). “Once the lake’s open, little by little everything else will have to reopen too.”

After being closed to all uses for several weeks pursuant to a county order, Clear Lake is currently closed to motorized boats and groups of more than two, while fishing from the shoreline and setting out on the lake in a paddle-powered vessel are now allowed.
