California faces another drought as lake beds turn to dust – a photo essay

Verdant hillsides losing their hue, receding reservoirs with bathtub rings of newly exposed earth, crops withering in the fields.

These are the visions of California’s parched landscape as the state braces for another potentially devastating drought. Water shortages and exceptionally dry conditions are already beginning to hit home.

The state is facing yet another hot, dry summer ahead, and the governor has declared a drought emergency in 41 of the state’s 58 counties. More than 37 million Californians reside in these drought areas, according to the US drought monitor.

“This is without precedent,” Newsom said at a news conference announcing the first two declarations in April, speaking from the bed of Lake Mendocino that had been reduced to arid, cracked clay. Not long ago, he would have been standing under 40ft of water. “Oftentimes we overstate the word historic, but this is indeed an historic moment.”

Suggest you read the USC paper titles “Mega Droughts” If Google hadn’t taken it down.
Years 850 AD to 1100 approx 250 years the total annual rain fall for California averaged less the 6” annual rain fall. This was followed by 1200AD to 1300AD with a second mega drought.
Since that time period California has enjoyed rainy seasons averaging over 14” of rain fall.
The papers predication is we have enjoyed a 100 year wet cycle 1900-2000 with drought periods to follow..
Hard to imagine living through an extended Mega Drought with today population along the west coast!

Better get that pipeline from the Great Lakes put in! All of the GREEN yards that come with the new homes being built needs water, LOTS of water!

If they can pipe oil a thousand miles, why can't they pipe water from the Mississippi to Lake Powell, and rewater the west?

If they can pipe oil a thousand miles, why can't they pipe water from the Mississippi to Lake Powell, and rewater the west?

Why would anyone build a 2500 mile pipeline from the Mississippi or Great Lakes when they can drain the Delta with a 30 mile Tunnel to Tracy ?

I guess they don't like money? They rather fight for the chump change the Delta is offering instead of something substantial for everyone.

I still maintain that the best solution is desalination of sea water. That is the only way we will actually get MORE fresh water. Anything else is just redistribution and battling over of what mother nature gives us. They have been doing it in the middle East for decades. The science is proven. Yes it is expensive, but so is going without water. It would certainly be money better spent than that train to nowhere that few people will ever use. Everyone uses water. We can take advantage of energy from solar, wind and wave action that is plentiful near the coast to power it. We could also use clean Nuclear (gasp!) energy. We must do something as the population keeps growing.

I agree completely. And we're running out of time.

Seems to me the solution should have been sorted out some 50-60 years ago. With California's population more than
doubling since that time frame California's water storage has not changed much. Some one dropped the ball and now we pay the price. WTG.

We stopped Nuclear power plants. France and Germany adapted the GE breaded technology and now over 90% nuclear power, plus desalinated supply water as a bye product.
Meanwhile we shut down possible fuel pipe lines to buy from Germany and Middle East to ship product over seas via freighters and trains. Wake up!

And I wonder where the Sites Reservoir is? If our elected reps cared about anything besides getting reelected we could have more water for all uses.
