My suggestion for anyone learning to cast and retrieve bottom contact jigs is start with a weedless black football head w/ premium hook in 3/8 & 1/2 oz with Yamamoto twin tail Hula grub 4”.
Colors 221, 301, 330 and any smoke black-Silver flake.
Tom
PS, PM email and will send your son a copy of my Horizontal Jigging In-Fisherman article.

What setup will he be using casting or spinning rod
I like MH spinning and casting rods but I only use maxima 4,6,8,10 line green I have five Spinning rods on the deck one with 4 lb two with 6 lb. 2 with 8 lb.
My casting rods I have 3 on the deck two with 8 lb.
One with 10 lb. All my rods are 6' 6" rods
On my spinning rods I throw jigs from 1/8 to 1/2 oz.
My casting rods I throw jigs from 3/8 to 3/4 oz.
In all types of structure. WRB has a great article on horizontal jigging I would take him up on his offer.
I also do a lot of vertical jigging in Dec through mid Feb very deadly presentation in the colder months in depths from 25 to 60 feet of water.

Thanks Mark, I have tried that several times, Mark delete and Go, an ad pops up and go back and start over, it’s catch 22. Something is haywire with my IPad.
You look comfortable with your procedure. At least the person who hit you carrier left their name.

Hi Jiggin, this is Bruce's grandson, Deavyn. I wanted to thank you for the jigs, I appreciate it a lot. They look awesome.
I understand you only make these jigs for select people, I'm very grateful.
Very generous of you. Thank you.

P.S. Do you have any jig trailer colors you'd recommend?

I like using 4" twin tails on 1/8 1/4 3/8 oz. Jigs depending on how I tie them up and hook size
3/8 1/2 3/4 oz I go with either single tail 5" or twin tails I use 4/0 5/0 6/0 mustad light wire hooks in everything I build and throw. They all can be made to be use as finesse jigs
Also I really like using the 5" singal tail grubs on 3/8 1/2 3/4 oz. Jigs in the winter months a perfect match.
June bug is another color Yamamoto use to make in 4" & 5" twin tail grubs but no longer do.
I think you can get them in hula grubs but the color has change some.
