Golden mussel found during boat inspection at Forebay

OROVILLE — A boat going through the inspection process at the Thermalito Forebay on Wednesday was deemed positive for the golden mussel, an invasive species that the California Department of Water Resources is trying to keep away from local waterways.

Inspections began on Monday at the Forebay where boaters must go through a checkpoint where workers thoroughly check the watercraft for standing water and signs of the mussel.

DWR issued a statement on Thursday that said the mussel was found on a pontoon boat. According to the statement, the boat was purchased on Wednesday morning by residents of the Oroville area. The statement said the watercraft had been away from the waters in the delta for “an unknown period.”

“Staff immediately contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for further inspection and decontamination,” the release from DWR said. “The vessel will not be allowed to launch at a DWR reservoir until the Department of Fish and Wildlife confirms that it is free of mussels.”

I had my boat checked for Oroville - they are only doing the inspections at the Forebay.

They put a wire with a number wrapped at the front part of the trailer and when you launch they take it off (and put a new one on when you leave the lake). Hours of 7:30 - 10:00 for launching. I think 6:30 - 9:00 would be better... If not 5:30 - 10:00.

They're finding mussels at these lakes but in 5-10 years the lakes that don't have inspections there will still not be a sign of mussels whatsoever. This was all planned. They want the delta tunnels and irrigation districts want full control of the water to send into fields. If they get rid of the people that use these resources then they can do whatever the hell they want with all the water without having to answer to anyone.

Really......... Ken Norton Jr......If you don't get it then you never will. Think of one lake tournament schedules and the cost and hassle to just going fishing. And, what about the last 75+ years of no mussels to be seen or found but all of a sudden some guy claimed to have spotted some and now they're here and getting moved from one body of water to another overnight. Forget about fishing and go and get your 10th covid booster. Unbelievable...........

And it sounds like you are confused about how invasive species work. Do you understand we had thousands of years with no Scotch Broom? And now try hiking through the hills in Butte County…..this is obviously just one example.

Look at Asian Carp in the Mississippi Delta. It’s nihilistic (and perhaps anti-human) to attempt nothing. How would your perspective change if you owned a houseboat on Oroville? Should a government facing adversity just roll over?

An authoritarian government would try to stop it, a democratic government would try to stop it. Only a really impotent society would do nothing.

Given enough time this mussel obviously will end up in Oroville. Who knows how it will persist with high temperatures and huge water-level fluctuations (combined with mitigation efforts). I would hope it would be “nothing”.

It’s just really easy to sit back and criticize. I have read a ton of history - your ilk has been wrong a lot! Just try to ponder that.

First off. I’m not a tournament fisherman but used to be. Circuits travel from lake to lake. How will that be possible now. Some lakes have quarantine periods from 30-60 days. Depending on who controls the lake. From what I read for some reason Oroville has no quarantine but Folsom does. Berry also I thought. And how about if they are gonna do this try keeping better hours. I like to be on the water at safe light. Not 8:30. Back to the whole tournament thing and like I said it’s not my life anymore. I’m just saying how will 150 boats be processed at 7:30. How will they travel from lake to lake in a circuit with quarantine periods. It’s not gonna work. Bottom line is I want to fish where I want to, when I want to without comrade Newsom controlling my time schedule.

The real questions have not been answered by any state officials.
If the state is worried about the movement of the mussels to bodies of water by vessels that will destroy their infrastructure.
Why would they want to waste tax dollars to build the tunnels, that will be damaged by mussels and send them elsewhere????

I think it’s pretty normally for a reservoir to take mitigation efforts. Try getting outside and interacting with normal people. I noticed their policy is more realistic. Inspection clean and dry.
If that’s the case it make a lot more sense than 30 mandatory quarantine then a lock to that specific body of water
If I understand Orville’s policy correctly I can fish any water in the country today show up clean and dry at Orville and launch with passed inspection
The next day.
Upon departure I get a green tag that lets me bypass the inspection the next time I come back.
This makes a hell of a lot more sense than Folsom berry new Melones and others

I don’t agree with being locked out for 30 days sitting dry because I visited clear lake
It addresses the mussel issue and retains our freedom logically as until things are figured out.
This will allow freedom of movement between waters and tournaments can deal with that

Zebra mussels are thought to have arrived in 1986 and were first discovered in Lake St Claire in 1988. How many decades before then, do you think, had the same ships arrived in that port already? These conspiracy theories don’t hold any water.

I'm sure the central valley will be next and if it happens it happens fishing or no fishing this is a serious problem fighting it won't solve the problem but
prolong it. It's not going to go away over night. Most likely it going to get worse before it gets better.
I'm sure it's coming to the valley and all the way to southern ca. they can't shut the delta down it impossible to do but you can bet there working on the problem with these mussles.

Right now building jigs fishing and the golden mussel problem just ain't that important right now.

-Those tunnels are a breeding grounds for those invasive species and all pipes siphoning water for irrigation on the River.

I love the back and forth on this issue . If you live in California and believe our elections aren't fraudulent and the California Government is not ran 90% plus by Democrats and berucrats you are living in denial .
