There’s a new invasive species in town

There’s a new invasive species in town — meet the golden mussel.
Golden mussels, originating from China and Southeast Asia, were first detected in California in October 2024 and are now spreading rapidly across the state. They can be identified in fresh to brackish water by their small size and light golden to darker yellowish-brown colored shell. Nicknamed ‘zebra mussels on steroids’ due to their rapid reproduction and broader environmental tolerance, golden mussels pose a serious threat to water quality, natural ecosystems, infrastructure and water conveyance systems.
How you can help: Clean, Drain and Dry.
CLEAN off visible aquatic plants, animals and mud from all equipment before leaving water access. DRAIN motor, bilge, livewell and other water containing devices before leaving water access. Clean boat and gear with hot water or DRY everything for at least five days.

I have been looking in some of those locations. So far I have not seen any. Not to say nothing is there
I’m not diving or anything like that
Just looking around on low tide

Looking around at low tide is all you have to do. The locations reported state a surface survey was used for detection. You should be able to go to any location noted and see the mysterious GM.
The Calaveras river sighting notes 1,000 GM's discovered by sighting survey. Yet the picture shows 3 mussels. Is that not suspicious? Where is a pic of the cluster? Post the pic of 1,000 as you claim to have found. Oh wait, you can't because IT IS ALL A COMPLETE HOAX!

Fishing last night in that general area I had a mussel on my hook, like it clamped onto the hook shank while flipping a rocky bank. I seen it and thought what the hell...that's a mussel!!!! It was about a 1/2 inch long, squeezed it and it broke, squiring juice.. I did my part killing one!

Did you take a picture?
The golem mussel adheres to surfaces. I doubt you could pull if free with a line but I could be wrong
What you describe I have done many times but they are fresh water clams. If you observe a freshwater clam you will see they open partially and if anything touches them they quickly close clamping on
I had fresh water clams from the delta in an aquarium many years ago I did indeed observe them
Get a picture next time
I’m not saying the mussels are not in the delta
I think they are. Just not seen one yet
I don’t think you can crush one open with your bare hands without the use of pliers or other tool

Got to ask yourself why haven’t the golden mussels been found in the Columbia River? I believe vessels from same countries enter the Columbia also.

I believe it. I’m sure you know the difference
I wonder how many were in that spot. Must be many if you caught one
Kind of scary

I dont know what cookies you're referring to there jiggn. Did u forget to take your meds again? Show me the proof, that's all I'm saying. The way they have presented this issue is suspect to say the least. I wish this GM drama would go up in smoke! The problem I have is the sizes they are reporting implies the GM has been here for a min 2 years. If the GM is transported as easy as they claim, many lakes would be "contaminated" by now. Their website shows the GM is present all around the Clifton Court Forebay, yet the 11 huge pumps drawing up to 10,300 cfs, continue to pump water all day every day down south with no issues eh? Those intakes would be covered with the GM by now if they have been here for years.

So does this mean that the state and federal gov't will stop pumping water from the delta into the aqueduct system? Of course not, and how many GM have been found in the aqueduct system? Go ahead and say it...none. What do we do with the cormorants, sea gulls and other marine creatures that consume GM and pass it in their feces?
DFW needs to update us on their research and what their doing to control the GM and not the sportsman. They spray aquatic vegetation, why not for....just saying. If not their like the medical profession that make billions of dollars treating your symptoms and not finding a cure for the disease.

It's real there in the delta your not going fishing on your favorite lake anytime soon. Your on Golden Mussel lock down. End of story until further notice.
