Scientist in Davis working to create solution to invasive Golden Mussels

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. —
The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, spanning 1,100 square miles, is a vital hub for California's water supply.

At the Skinner Fish Facility near Byron, water for 27 million Californians and hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland passes through the systems.

Their louvers ensure fish don’t make it into the water pumps, but those protection efforts are being undermined. Early this year, golden mussels began clogging the system.

"They have the ability to completely close that off," Trent Schaffer, civil maintenance branch manager for the Department of Water Resources Delta Field Division, said.

Schaffer said golden mussels have increased maintenance at the facility fourfold, requiring weekly cleanings instead of monthly. Still, the golden mussels hold on and continue to spread.

Why can't they just pass the water thru a "Grinder" and then filter out the grindings ???

How would they keep the fish out of the grinder?

The same way they are doing it now, just place the grinder after the fish screen.

UV Light at the right frequency and exposure will kill almost anything.

Golden Mussel larvae are microscopic, floating freely in the water. As they mature, they settle on surfaces to develop into the actual mussel form. So there’s nothing to grind - the larvae get anywhere, and through everything, with the regular water flow. They then attach and clog up pipes etc.

He’s talking about grinding the adult GM
It is attaching itself to the equipment now restricting water flow and eventually plugging it up

I see your point. Once the larva passes the Grinder and into the pipe it’s useless.

It not a serious issue around the delta ships have been coming to the port of Stockton for over 50 years the mussels are here to stay you just learn to live with them. As far as the management at the lake go they can do what they want. You'll keep complaining you can't go fish anytime you want at your favorite or hold a tournament when you want they got you and there not much you'll can do about it.
Just deal with it and get over it people.

Are here in the central valley are all open and all mountain lakes good fishing and lots of boating I don't see any problems here. They could be doing the same in northern ca if they wanted too. Here in central ca it's money that drive these lakes and summer boating and fishing camping is what bring it in so shutting down are lakes is not possible. We don't have to wait 30 days to go fishing on are favorite lakes
