how heavy a line for buzzbaits

Ok, I've lost my share of buzzbaits lately (10# PLine CXX), so last night I put on some old 17# Spider line. Got a nice 5.8 my first cast on my brand new Terminator blade ($12 after tax) and a little later got into a bigger fish that went where it wanted at will (not that the 5.8 did not, but it did not go into the old stick-ups like the 2nd one did). She broke off before I could get it untangled and took the lure too- OUCH.
What lb test do you guys that specialize in this style of fishing use at the most, especially knowing there are stick-ups all around. I feel even a heavier line might be called for.
Thanks in advance.
5.8 first cast in one of my favorite spots on Lake Hodges.

I, of course, throw braid on my frogs, 65# Power Pro, so I'll spool some up on another reel too.
Looks like it will be the same for my Lunker Plunker too, as Cooch had said, the mono takes a lot of time to get it to start working, and all this time I thought it was just my inexperience!
Thanks,
MS

15 pound mono should be fine in open water! If theres alot of weeds, and stuff where you are throwing it, I would use braid!

I like Power Pro and I tend to stay within the 30 to 40 pound test. I like the smaller diameter braid.
If you lost that fish in the delta. You need to bring out the big guns when tossing a buzz bait. It's a big fish bait. 7' 6" Heavy action or better with good wenching reel to boot. So you can get hooked up with little effort and get them coming towards you. If you cut them big girls slack your going to loose them most of the time. At least thats the I see it.
Good Fishin

I use braid with the buzzer. I have lost a few bigguns lately by being too aggressive after the hook-set and trying to pull them too hard. Usually they will jump and throw the bait, so I tend to play them a little easier now.

I fish buzzbait on 15lb Big Game and 65lb Power Pro - I did have my power pro snap on me at Clear Lake and loose my fav heart Double buzzer (damn 2lber) The line snapped about 6" above the bait probably due to a hook fouling in hte line from my swimbait....

You don't need braid for buzzbaits, all you need is 20 lb test Izorline.

I almost never use braid for buzzbaits.
I use 15 and 18 lb. Maxima.
How often should you use braid for topwater? Almost never!
A buzzbait is a topwater bait.

I guess I don't know how to post a reply only once. I'll just read the forum and leave the typing to all the experts.

About only time I use braid is with topwater baits, why don't you like braid for baits on top?

Ugh Baby Gorilla - I use braid on Spinnerbaits, Rattle Traps, Spooks, Buzzbaits and Swimbaits. I find the 0 stretch and ease of castability a benefit with braid. For buzzbaits I agree that Mono is sufficient, however when working around the thick mats or in between the tulles on Clear Lake and Delta braid will cut the tulles down and land me that fish!
ED - relax I was just funnin!

I would go braid for sure...I DO NOT KNOW IF ANYONE MENTIONED IT....

BUT BRAID IS GREAT FOR TOPWATER.. BUt if you got a toad and it runs into cover get that trolling motor on high and get in there. try just keeping pressure and move on it. trying to drag a fish out of heavy cove can be a major risk!

And as far as p-line goes, i have been in s.f.north bay in some major striper frenzies and only threw 10 and 12 lb cxx..no problems. i even have several times where a nice 8lb striper run and wrap me around some old ship pilings. i am thing to my self there goes another lucky craft!! DOH!! but alli did was keep that pressure and chase that fish down.. in the boat it went!...
