Today on Clear Lake

Had Gregg2 pick up some Ox Blood worms for me. They didn't have the 8 inch reefers so he got 6 inch paddletails. Put in at Lakeport Yacht Club ramp. Cruised to Willow point a couple hundred yards away. Gregg2 said. There was a guy there already, he didn't have any luck, he packed up and left.

I said, "I bet he wasn't using Oxblood worms. We stopped and I nailed a 2 lb. 1st cast. Gregg2 got 1, then me again. After that it slowed so we went looking for woods that yielded last year at this time. The woods are big trees in 5 feet of water with branches hanging in the water and brush growing all over. We started nailing them right away. Soon I had 8 and Gregg2 had 4. These oxblood worms were to easily stripped from the hook and I rarely got more than 1 fish per worm.

I opened my tackle box to find some pure red Senkos slightly redder that oxblood. I took the Bassmaster Senko rod LK gave me and flipped it close to the brush. Fish on. 4 lb. 2 cast later I threw up by a tule clump. Fish on 5 lb. No juice in the camera, wouldn't turn on :( . The 5 pounder was the biggest of the day but we were busy. I only had three red Senkos but they lasted all day and I still have one left.

Gregg2 finally got tired of fishing his purple and put on an oxblood Sweet Beaver. Fish on. It seems as though it didn't matter what color you used as long as it was red. ;-) I wish I had a red swim-bait. Swim-bait wasn't working today.

I ended up with 14-15, Gregg2 ended up with 9-10. Beautiful day, slightly breezy - breezier as the day progressed. Fish from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Never seen the lake turn around so fast. The bigger fish appeared to be filling with eggs, a couple males had bloody tails. Just 2 weeks ago I couldn't buy a fish. Today it was so different.

Greg,
Thats a good day. The flip bite was dead for me. Caught some on blades, a couple on swimmers but I guess I aint fishing slow enough. Practicing for the delta. Flip, Flip and more flipping. Refused to break out the dropshot or weightless senko. Glad you got em good

Yeh, They weren't tourney size but fun and good practice for the old reflexes. It was good to get some confidence back after a November-March funk. I'll be ready to raise the stakes and fish for bigger ones in a few weeks. Start jigging and paddletails. So far no luck on those.

I went looking on-line for the Senko color I used, so I could re-order, and couldn't find it. I was a plain red. I had them for years and never used them. Then I figured out they were Kinami Baits. A color Yamamoto doesn't make.

Thanks for the post. My Dad, and a few other friends are headed there in two weeks and we hope the bite keeps picking up. Your info and the reports page is a great tool for us out of towners.

Hi Greg,
What the heck happened? I knew it was going to turn around but not that fast, but it looks like you are fishing the right water with the right bait, save some of those toads for me and my Brother!!! we will be up there 3/15-3/19, I don't know if I will stay all 5 days, it depends on the bite and the weather, notice I said bite first, if the bite is really good, a huricane couldn't keep me off the water!!!
It looks like all fish were in shallow close to cover, what was the deepest fish you caught and what was the shallowest? What brand of Ox Blood worm do you use? Maverick? Robo worm?

First day I realized oxblood was working Lion Killer gave me 8 inch reefers, I don't know what brand. The second day I used Marverick Oxblood paddletails to start then switched to the red Kinami (Walmart-Kmart) My buddy got some oxblood sweet beavers at one of the lakeport tackle stores.

The deepest I fished was about 8-10 feet the shallowest 2 ft. I never tried any deeper Caught a couple middle of nowhere fish.

Hi Greg,

What is a Reefer? I know what a Reeper is, it looks like a feather or leech but I do not know what a Reefer is or at least not the kind you fish with:)

You have me curious now!!

LOL have I been spelling it wrong? I've never bought any but have had a bunch given to me. I must have 50 and I don't even know how to pronouse it. I always thought they were calling them reefers. Shame on me.

LOL I was laying in bed in Pacific Grove one morning when I was 45. I thought, hmmm some bud would be nice then watch the sunrise. I started thinking when was the last time I smoked some. It had been three years. I never tried to quit. It just became something I didn't enjoy anymore. Being in control and responsible for my thoughts became much more important.

But by looking at the things I call lures, the damage must have been done already lol.
