Okay, since frogs and other topwaters are starting to get hit, what do you guys think of these baby bird lures? I have one made by Persuader, haven't fished it much yet. I notice there are some other ones folks are starting to sell as well, although frogs are much more popular.

I only know of one and thats the Persuader's Baby Duck. If you look in the video archives of this site you can watch a Video with Randy Pringle fishing this bait. The action the bait had really suprised me. I havent fished it nor do I own one but they look pretty cool. Who else is comeing out with a bird bait?

The Heddon Crazy Crawler had bird wings painted on the body a long time ago.

I don't think the idea is a really new one, its just cycling and popping up again.

I did fish a Watson's Wrat purposely around an area where ducks were nesting some years ago. (I had noticed duckling numbers dropping in that area.) The first cast, where the ducks came off the land, resulted in a seven pounder, the BF and win. It wasn't really a duck lure but thats what I had.

That did prompt me to hunt down a few Watson's duck lures.

When I was a kid, I blasted a dove with a 410 that landed on the water twitching. While I was trying to figure out how to get it, a Bass ate it whole. Ruined me for life.

A fish that ate birds...must be some kind of monster.

We use a baby duck, it is made of bass wood, its brownish yellow, has large treble hook on the bottom. It land upright everytime you toss it under a dock. Man it works great at Clearlake in the spring , hatch time for baby ducks. I have seen baby black birds work also.

Isn't there a Lunker Punker Jr. painted in a blackbird color that works really well on the Delta?

Bass pro shop had a black bird that is aprox 3 " long, wing tips painted with some red and yellow. The treble hook comes out the back with a small skirt. I have had some good days with it. ONTHETHING !!!

I remember fishing Oso Park (private water shed lake in SoCal) they had fly guys that would use Baby Bird lures...the bass in this lake would just CLOBBER these flies.

I have cought fish that were keyed on birds with other baits like frogs, IKAS, and Buzzbaits...I believe Fishermans Warehouse has a few bird baits but I have never used these....

Cooch, does size matter much in Jitterbugs? You prefer the old style metal bill or the new style transparent plastic bill? Would getting the larger jitterbugs equal longer casting in turn allow you to cover more water? What the best retrieval technique on JBs?

My brother fishes in Virginia and has caught many from 6-8 pounds on the Thornwood bird. Mike

it is a little harder than Balsawood, Easy to work with !

I picked this up a few years ago off e-bay its carved out of bass wood I had Jeremy paint it up for me notice the colors are exactly what the delta ducklings look like, Jeremy as always did a pimp job on the paint. He added two brite orange blades with BB swivels it comes thru the water awsome and the blades really make a a commotion like the ducklet is swimming.



It's an odd lure but one I will never part with

What is the hook up ratio you get on that thing? One of the main reasons why I havent bought a bird bait is because the head and bulk of the body seem like they can prevent a good hook up causing lost fish?

Honestly I must say I have not caught anything on it I just threw it a few time to see the action but it is just to nice to mess up

But maybe one spring I will throw

I would bet over 1/2 of the bites you get with the frog, the fish thinks its a bird.

These suckers were all over Clearlake a couple of years ago.Haven't seen them this year yet.Weired spring weather, they're probably all down in Mexico havin a Corona!
We'll have to ask Greenie where they've gone to.
