I want the best batteries on the market. Money aside, what batteries, brand, model etc. would you put in your boat? I'm running a z20 with a 36 volt TM. Opinions on lead acid vs. gel vs. absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries? Cranking and Trolling Motor.

The best was Trojan SCS 225 but they are no longer going to make a marine battery.
The next best is the AGM from North Star, but with that there comes weight.
Ther are so many company's that are no longer making trolling batteries, for ex Trojan, Trolling Thunder to name a few.
Then it comes down to how you will use your boat. Will it be 1 time a month? 2 times a month or every week.
What ever battery you decide on make sure it has the most reserve minuites you can get. The norm on reserve is 160 min. But with some of the batteries you can get up to 225 min.Try and find a battery with at least 180 min of reserve for a trolling battery. But my choice would be a AGM battery with the most reserve I could find for trolling and AGM with at least 1000 CCA"s for the big motor.
As far as name brand I will not get into that on a form.

I went w the Centennial AGM'S (T/M & crank) made for Battery Systems by North Star....... formerly labled Dual Pro Lightning...... my group 31's have 200 hours reserve capacity and 1500 MCA (Opti's love em)

my simpleton understanding is lead acid are the best value,,, gel offers no benefit to bassers (they're designed not to freeze),,, and AGM'S have the best performance, longest life, are spill proof and require zero maintenance...... the draw back to AGM'S is they cost more and are slightly heavier than a comparable size lead acid

I recommend the AGM's if money is not an option. You're getting the best battery and it's truly a maintenance free battery. It's a true install-and-forget battery. The only down side is they are a little heavier than the lead-acid's but then again when it comes to performance the lead-acid's don't compare.

Thank you for the input fellas. I've been leaning toward the AGM batteries until I found out how heavy they really are. I want a maintenance free batterie like the AGMs. What is the weight difference between a group 27 lead acid vs. a AGM? Also, they do make a group 27 cranking batterie in an AGM right?

without looking up the stats,, I'd say roughly about 10lbs each..... it's worth it in my opinion

speaking of the North Star ( i think it applies to all AGM'S) they're dual purpose... crank or T/m, same battery

and yes they due come in 24, 27, or 31 sizes.... but the North Star 27's have the same foot print as the 31's,, just not as tall.... for only a couple bucks more,, I chose to go w all four group 31's.... always better to have more reserve capacity
