I need to install a lanyard type kill switch on my outboard. It's an older Johnson 20hp. Where would I even look to find one and how are they installed? I believe the motor is an 84 or 85. I need it so I can fish a small tourney coming up. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Tie a rope around your igniton coil wire -- and then thread it through your pants loops.

.....You just may have to run with your engine cowling off for the day.

So I am looking around online and see kits for these things. Are they universal? Do you just remove the push button kill switch and install this one? I just want to order the correct thing.

call c&c marine in modesto. i got mine from there. pretty easy to hook up. just tap some wires. not exactly sure what colors you need to tap into since i don't know how your ign is set up. ask the techs over at their shop for advise. they were pretty helpful to me.

It's going to be different that yours. Mine is a tiller steer outboard. No key, no console.

Get a switch, mount it where it's convenient and tap it into one of the wires on the coil. That should work.

I just took it apart and it looks pretty easy to replace the push button kill switch with the clip/lanyard type. Looks like a universal one will work just fine. Thanks for the replies.
