Big Hammer swimbaits

Anyone looking for an alternative to the $$$ swimbaits. I suggest you pick some of the 5 and 6.5 inch Hammers. No, I am not sponsored by them, and yes I know Cooch has been touting them for sometime. However, I was given some a month or so ago to put up against my fishtraps (for stripers). There's no comparison.
Put one guy in the front of the boat with FT's and one in the back with Hammers, and the guy in back will win hands down. Here's the thing though, you won't believe the limits of Greenies these things are accounting for right now! 25-30lb limits on a regular basis, just ask Coochie, he'll be happy to verify himself. At least now that I let the secret out. I know tacklewarehouse has some colors, and found out this morning Bass Pro Shops in Manteca does as well.

Pearl/Clear Clear/Pearl

Good Luck,

Dan

Yeah, hammer heads are a great bait. Ive caught fish, largemouth not stripers, on them on every lake Ive fished them and that does not include the Delta. They smell a little funny, but they are a great bait to have in your arsenal.

Can anyone keep a secret?

Honestly my hands look like hamburger after all the stripers I was handling this weekend off that bait. They ate traps, money minnows, mission fish and everything else I threw. Except a Sebil I was really excited about throwing. Thing swims great, dont have any idea why they wouldnt eat it. Drug it through the boil 15 times at differnt depths, fast slow, twitch, dead stick didnt matter not a swipe. The hammer on the other hand was a cast and set, they were there and hit it before you could engage the real. Anyone else have a simalar story about this bait? I dont get it, looks great, I would eat it.

What's the difference between the hammers and fishtraps? I've only ever fished FT's in the salt, and never used any of that style swimbait for bass.

The main difference is the design of the tail. It really makes the bait rock and roll back and forth, thus it puts off a lot of vibration, and can be slow rolled even slower due to the increased resistance.

As far as I am concerned they are the only swimbait I will throw in the salt. Hands down they have caught more fish for me than any other swimbait like it. Gonna be putting them to the test this weekend in a bay bass tournament :)

I am glad to see that you will be switching brands Dan!

The differences seem to be mainly in the depth of the body and the position of the tail. If you like Fish Traps I wouldn't run out and exchange them in for Hammers, don't get me wrong Hammers are a good bait, but so is a Fish Trap, and for now the Hammer doesn't come in my favorite color.

Yep, done switched, and whatever you do, don't put a 4 incher on a chatterbait!

OUCH! :o

Hey Dan, maybe that's because, ya ain't seen or tried tried all 68 of the Big Hammer colors! I'm running accross new favorites every week. HAR! HAR! HAR!

Sunrize Tackle's Big Hammer is probably the biggest selling Saltwater plastic swimmer on the west coast from Mexico to Alaska. They have a huge presence in both Europe, Africa and Australia! I can't thank Rob Belloni enough fer turning me onto this bait three years ago. I have found that bass both here, Clearlake and other NorCal lakes, will just absolutely gobble this bait.

The two characteristics you mentioned Dan are key, but it's that larger square paddle that makes most of the difference in how that bait waggles. I know some guys like that side to side wobble Dan mentions, something we first saw in the mission fish. Yet when you use one of Sunrize's Hammer heads, that bait will run straight as an arrow, and that tail with move too and fro like no other paddle tail I've ever used. You can git this bait to move differently just by changing the size and shae of the jig head ya use.

I have played with a lot of the various plastic paddle tails the past three years, heck 8 years if'n ya go back to the original Osprey Talons, this ones a keeper fer me, it just out performs the rest. That Fish Trap is also a fish catching bait, I have a few myself, I just don't pick em up anymore.

don't need to try them since there is one color that is pure money and hammer don't make it. like I said it's a great bait, but so is Fish Trap, and then that one color. The guys down in the East Cape went nuts when I pulled out some hammer baits, no doubt it is one of the best selling and best baits out there.

I would like to try the Big Hammer for largemouth. I'm fishing reservoirs. What sizes would you recommend? How would I rig it up? How would I fish it this time of year?

5" color of your choice, 3/8 oz jig head with a strong hook and the widest gap you can find. Super glue head to body.

Let sink to bottom. Slow roll on botton all day long.

That G1 classified is a MC swimbait   (Corey is a good guy)

Check out the Pearl Swimbait web site.................and i am not sponsered by them im the OWNER

Really iv said stuff here before but no takers, they racked up alot of tourny wins=$$$$$$$$$$ for the SWBA series.

Action and durability is second to none, many people will testify to 20-25 calicos per bait

Bay Tackle at El Cerrito has carry big hammer swimbait for last 5 years. they have many different colors available, mainly salt water anglers use for rockcod fishing and tuna. and some swim for strippers. good to know bass loves it too.
