well we are still trying to decide on a place to retire, and now the wife is looking at the mariposa area... i see there is bass lake about 30 miles to the south east, and there is also new melones about 35 miles to the northwest, and the don pedro which looks to be about 75 miles away from mariposa... my question is, is bass lake worth fishing? i see its pretty small and has a 5 mph speed limit. any body have any info on the area, or any of the lakes near by ? thanks for the help

From the Mariposa area you have access to all of the foothill lakes. Pine Flat, SE of Fresno, Millerton, NE of Fresno, Hensley and Eastman small but good are east of Le Grand where I live, McClure, Don Pedro and New Melones are also easy to reach form that area. Bass lake would not be my choice to fish even though there are some good fish there but the water is cold in the winter and full of "Lake Lice" in the summer. Google the area and you'll see all that is available assuming we get some rain and snow this winter and spring.

Lake McClure is in Mariposa County. Pedro is not too far from McClure. Awesome lakes. Pedro probably has the next world record largemouth in it and McClure probably has the next world record spot. I have seen some huge spots in McClure. I guide on these lakes as well. Mike

Fishing is great but life can be tough in Ole Mariposa. Make sure you are healthy and do not have an HMO. The hospital tries hard but it is really small and built in modulars. The real ones are about as far as some of the lakes 35 -50 miles along twisty narrow steep Highway 49. Check it out before closing an escrow. I suggest you look in Groveland, Sonora, or Don Pedro Area near La Grange. Best of Luck!

Hi kane-o, I know your area, I used to run around in Montrose, LaCrescenta, Tujunga, Sunland and etc in my younger days. As for Bass Lake, they do have bass in it but, it's generally known for trout fishing. I've had some fun times at New Melones and Don Pedro looks so good but, can be tough if you don't know it. All in all there is some great fishing to be had in all of those lakes up there. I would team up with a local stick from here or check out some guides first before sampling the action. You know, it gets pretty warm up there in 49er country!
