Cottonwood Cove, NV - 23 teams vied for top honors in the first of two WON Bass Nevada tournaments on Lake Mohave. With a light wind blowing the teams blasted off for what they hoped would be a triumphant day on Lake Mohave. As both Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass were starting to bed, the angler’s expectations ran high that they would be the ones who would weigh in the biggest bag of the tournament.
With the wind starting to lie down the first of two flights began to arrive just before 3:00. As the first teams brought their bags to the scales it was plain to see it was going to be a good day. By the time the first flight had finished their weigh in the bar was set, it would take at least 16 lbs. to win. When the second flight brought their fish to the scales 16 lbs. would only place third.
The top team was Deejay Evans and Chris Landerman last years Anglers of the Year. Evans and Landerman had a rough start to the season only finishing in the top ten one time in four tournaments. That was about to change. Deejay and Chris managed to catch three five pound largemouths’ to weigh in a total of 19.64 lbs and the big bass of the tournament of 5.64 lbs.
Second place went to the team of Mike and Brad Johnson. The Johnson brothers were fishing with us for the first time. They have been on a roll by winning several tournaments or placing second in the ABA circuit. They continued their strong performance by weighing in a huge bag at 17.13 lbs. with a big bass of 5.31 lbs. giving the second big bass of the day.
Third place went to the team of Danny Branscum and Troy Duncan. Because of a prior commitment by Danny, Troy fished alone. Troy had a pretty good day by bring in a limit weighing 16.82 lbs with his big bass of 4.21 lbs. Troy was able to keep the teams string of limits going making it at least 69 out of 70 tournaments over a 10 year period.
The fourth place team of Matt Warner and Jesse Milicevic were starting to make their move on the top teams. Matt and Jesse completed their day by bring 14.07 lbs to the scale and a big bass of 3.57 lbs. The way pre-fishing started for Jesse we weren’t sure if they if he knew where to put any fish they would catch. Jesse speared a wave on Friday and filled up every storage area with water. I guess that was OK it gave them plenty of room for their 14 lbs. of fish.
Finally in fifth place was the father/son team of Dean and Ryan Yamagata. Dean and Ryan have been on a roll of sorts by winning three of the last four 8lb. options. They were hoping to when they brought their four fish to be weighed. When the scales stopped bouncing their total was 12.07 lbs., just missing their fourth straight option. Although their weight was good for fifth place it turned out the best part of the day was Ryan’s 18th birthday. We wish Ryan a happy birthday and are glad he and his dad chose to spend with us at Lake Mohave.
At the conclusion of the weigh in we had our first annual Lake Mohave Potluck dinner for the anglers and their families. The event was held around the motel and the beach at Cottonwood Cove. There was food and drink had by all. We combined dinner, the awards and raffle to make a fun evening for all. Thanks to Dwayne Kurr his wife Brenda, dad Elmer and broth Bill for cooking up the deep fried turkey and for the original idea for having the potluck. Thanks to Ken and Mary Radke for their help and the beautiful cake with our circuit logo on top. Thanks to everyone who brought food and drinks and for their help in making the get together a success.
We want to thank all of our national sponsors including Nitro Boats, Mercury Marine, MotorGuide, Plano, Lowrance Electronics, and all of our other sponsors.
Thanks to our local sponsor Stoney’s Rockin’ Country and North Forty, Pioneer Hotel and Gambling Hall in Laughlin, Blue Ribbon Trophies for donating our Big Bass Awards, GEST Properties the official lodging for WON Bass Nevada including the Microtel Hotel in Las Vegas, Hawthorn Inn and Suites in Henderson and the Falcon Ridge Hotel in Mesquite Nevada, Phillips Fishing Products and West Coast Fund Raising. Thanks to Colette, the manager of Cottonwood Cove for her help and support and her great staff for taking care of our needs.
Thanks to my staff for making my job so easy. Thanks to Terri and Mike Helm, Danny Branscum and Troy Duncan.
Thanks to our new teams that came out to fish with us. Thanks to Darrel Dagdigian and George Arakelian, Brad and Mike Johnson and John Davidson and Randy Lyman. Hope you will fish with us again.
