Fishing a Cold Front

Ok, so I am going fishing this weekend and saw that the weather reports says that there is going to be a cold front moving in around Saturday evening.

So I guess my question would be, how to fish an approaching cold front.

I have been thinking about the same thing. My thought is the bass will still be there. They might go into a more negative feeding mode and reposition themselves. Basically my thought would be that they might hold tighter to the available cover and be more lethargic. Slow way down with T-Rigs and the jigs. Find the holes in the weeds and back off the bank. Look for them in the 10' to 15' range as they should back off the bank and hold to the structure breaks or drop offs. I plan on throwing big jigs and big worms T-Rigged. They will still want the big meal and it will basically be a reaction bite. "I think" Good luck

I'm going out Saturday regardless. I only managed 3 bites last weekend and hope to build on that.

I think everyday is different out there, so go out with all your guns loaded and keep throwing stuff at em. If your lucky, they might just show you something.

At the moment the backseat is open, if any one's interested.

Hey Doug, are you fishing the Delta or one of the lakes?

I can't speak much for fishing cold fronts on the Delta, but lakes for me is a different story. The approaching front will either turn them on, or shut them down. I've had some outstanding days in bad weather, and some that forced me to fish harder and think more-which I actually like.

We all know to avoid that first day post-front with the cold clear blue skies. I've NEVER done good on those days.

The fish could just totally do what they are't supposed to like they did to me the past two weekends.

One weekend I fished, it was the day after a front. Bluebird skies and cold with little to no wind. I had a great day for the lake I was fishing on, one of the better days I've had there is a while.

Next weekend, same lake, pre-front, low pressure, cloudy with a steady wind. I thought it would be ideal. The fish didn't agree and I only boated one that day. They were not very active and the bites I did get were short strikes.

Just be prepared for anything.

I am actually fishing Berryessa this weekend and it looks like by all accounts I will be fishing while the front is coming. I am hoping it doesn't lock them down, but I have a feeling that it is going to be a good bite. I don't know that just by be the optimist in me.

So how was the fishing? Did you get caught in the rain like I did?

I fished Melones from the shore yesterday. Air temp was 61. I was walking 100' above the water and could see fish cruising the bank, but I wasn't sure if it was Carp or not so I skipped it. I ended up fishing the last cove towards the mouth of Carson Creek. While I was setting up, I got to see what I think was spawning behavior of a couple of nice sized Spots. I hear they do this to loosen up the eggs?

At any rate, I found fish from 2-25', scattered. Nothing big, but had fun. Got drenched and caught 1/3 of them on my hand tied jig, so I was happy. I can't wait for the next front.

What a difference a week makes.

Went out Saturday as well. They weren't jumping in the boat, but I was able to get a few. Nothing that would win any tournaments, but it was nice to get bit.

Now where are those big mama's hanging out???

We hit oroville on Saturday and it started raining on us about 10-11 am. THe wind picked up and the main body was white capping. This was my 1st trip to Oroville this year and found the bite real tough. Caught two for the day, one small one one decent female full of eggs. Had another buddy out in his boat at the same time as us with simular results. I did not realize fully this was a cold front, when I did it I knew why we had such a misserable day. Normally pre-front conditions are great, just not pre-cold front.

I actually had quite a few bites, ended up catching a 5 fish limit but nothing to brag about.

I did have a really good bite, but got so excited that I set the hook to early. It seems that I am always one missed fish from putting together a good bag. Oh well it beats workin' anyday.
