Well, look on the bright side of it. It looks to be a fairly small bass, sub 2lbs. Could have been worse like a 10lber.

Depending on which fishery, I actually would like to see more harvesting of bass. Take a lake like Oroville. There's so many small spots in that lake that it'll probably be a good thing to remove some of those tiny bass.

I think a lot of people here also understand selective harvest for those that enjoy eating a catch. Especially from lakes that have over populations of a size group of fish ... like just about every spot lake

I agree that some lakes are in need of some "selective harvesting" but those fish right around 2lbs are prime breeders, and if your going to remove some, take the little guys, it might take more to make a meal but better for the fishery in the long run.

As a sportsman we have a right to a five fish limit. In a tournament where catch and release is mandatory we have an obligation as sportsman to eat our kill, if a fish dies in the livewell.

i dont mean to change the subject but what would you say to guy who draws yor backseat during a tourny and you know he eats everything he catches

I used to get angry when I would see someone taking a bass or asking me to keep a bass for harvest. Then I was out fishing with a buddy that fly fishes tournaments -- where the fish is also kept alive -- and he asked me what I did with the trout that I catch when up camping and fly fishing. He pointed out the hypocritical view, and I have just bit my tongue since.

The argument of strictly catch and release and the legal rights to keep fish as they please is all relative just like anything else in this world. If someone keeps a fish or even 5 bass at that, no one has any right to say anything to this person if he or she is not breaking the law.

Ask Buddhist and Taoist how they feel about a sport where Westerners catch and release fish just for a sport. Once again, all relative.

Do I eat bass? I tried once when I was in high school and never ate it since. Didn't taste good compared to saltwater species such as rockfish and yellowtail.

All I can say by law is whoever flayed the fish, is the Sh#ts and needs a lesson on Flay'in. Wasted alot of meat.

Does anyone actually ~like~ the taste of Largemouth? I don't. I've had them 4 or 5 times in my life. If I was going to target a member of the bass family for food, it would be Stripers. I could get enough to fillet for a deep fry in beer batter.

Runner up on my list would be Spots. 1. they compete with Largemouth. 2. they don't have that f****** oily taste that Largemouth have. If I do keep Spots, it's usually up to around 2.5#.

The only times I'll take a Largemouth is if while I'm using bait for another species, a bass gets gut-hooked and won't live. Or when "Trophy Guy" is anchored on a point at Amador using Craws and just leaves the 8.5# Florida strain he just killed.

At least there's one person here who knows something about selective harvest techniques!
I suppose if I liked the taste of bass a little more, I'd chew on a few everyonce in a while.
But smallmouth are pretty dang good....

Well, would kinda have to as the striper is the true member of the bass family - largemouth, smallmouth, spots, etc... are not "bass" but members of the sunfish family.

I'd expect if you were targetting something in the same family, it would more likely be crappie?

Oh, and speaking of species, Brian isn't actually a troll, although he sometimes displays troll-like characteristics! I think rather he may be a member of the heyena family??? Seems more logical!

Lots of people catch and eat LMB..In the past I have done so also..The only time I would do so now is when the fish doesn't survive the catch and release phase ( gut hooked and such)..I was a farm boy, and we generally ate what we caught and shot..We also practiced catch and realease back then, we generally released all the really small fish, just too much trouble preparing them for what you ended up with..I do agree with Rich, it looks as though a lot of good meat was left on the fish..

I agree with Rich, if you're gonna fillet them, do it right. Unless you do like I did when we were kids. We boiled the head and any meat left on the bones in a stainer for soup stock.

I'm 99.9% C&R, but if ones gonna die, it ain't going to waste. Only problem I have with anyone keeping their limit is during the spawn. It seems as everyone and their entire family is out there and they keep everything they catch. That can't be good for the numbers.

Also that bait messed up and gave alot of fish near misses to the gill plate - even though it was a Fish Catcher - The Daiwa Dead or Alive Wake Jr.




And another fish on the same bait that was smaller.... And missed the rear trebble hook into it's gills as that bait does not give backwards. I believe Luke met the demise of 6-7 fish on that single bait alone before he stopped fishing with it. Each one happened the same way as they took it on the front - and the rear trebble hook stuck them in the gills.

So I guess possibly thatthe bait's name was apply applied to it durring testing from Dawia ?

Wrong.. you never have to belly cut and remove guts.. one swipe with the knife...flip fillet and with a second swipe of the knife the skin is removed. Little trimming and you are ready for some very good eatin.

I found this one in the garbage at cammanche a couple weeks ago.. the guy did a good job here with the knife. Kind of made me sad to see all the eggs..

There is nothing wrong with keepin a fish or two for the skillet, but this time let the girls go.. come to think about it it is good pratcie to let all girl fish go during the spawn time.

The smaller bass as pictured here are the best eating. Obviuosly this guy selected the best size for table fare.

My suggestion - kosher salt and fresh ground pepper, dipped in egg and panko bread crumbs. Pan fried till golden brown. That's some good eats right there.

And to the guy who posted "why post here when 90% of us are C&R?" .....my response is that I practice catch and release 90% (actually more) of the time. Nothing wrong with harvesting some of your catch. Keep only what you can eat in one sitting. dont stock up the freezer....fresh is always best.
