Do you Delta guys run the line through the hook eye before snelling or just snell on the hook shaft?..What is best hook?

JOHN. WHEN I LIVED UP ON THE EEL RIVER FOR 20 YEARS, I FISHED FOR STEELHEAD AND ALWAYS SNELLED MY HOOKS, ALWAYS WNET THRU THE EYE ONCE, MADE LOOP, WRPED 6 TIMES, WNET BACK THRU THE LOOP AND CINCHED DOWN. I KNOW SOME GUYS PASS THRU THE EYE TWICE.....I USED A 3906 MUSTAD STYLE HOOK.

Do you snell when going braid directly to the hook?

Johnny C, not trying to hijack your thread but I just started punching recently and had a couple questions that are related to your thread.

What is snelling?

What lb. braid are you guys using for punching?

Not for what you're talking about.

Leave the line out of the eye on a straight shank hook to get the leverage you're looking for.

This guy shows how I do it. Like Marty said it leverages the hook point towards the target when you set the hook.

Snelling is the way to go anytime you're fishing the short line....to me, it seems like it has alot more impact resistance because you're not stressing one or two small sections of line, but you are putting stress on the entire knot, which is in contact with a whole lot more hook than a standard palomar or Trilene knot.

I have been using Owner Rig 'n' Hooks for Senkos and Flipping for quite awhile. Should I be using a different hook for punching? I am not sure that snelling will work with the shank on the Owners. What pound braid are you guys using, 65lb.?

Ok, played with this knot today on the lake with good results. Using 50 pound braid and a bmf hook. Used the knot in the youtube video but in looking around the "snell knot" is something slightly different it looks to me. http://www.fish4fun.com/snell.htm. Which one is the way to go for those that are experts in the matter. Does the modified snell from the video still give the kicking action for better hook ups? Also, any problems with braid slipping with either of these?

I would put abandon the snell know idea. Easy to nick and break. Try a this. Centering pin by owner.

If you are using a BEAD and a weight, DON'T GO THROUGH THE BACK OF THE HOOK EYE TOWARDS THE POINT, as I did when I first started snelling. This will cause the hook to flip upside down and out to the side, and you will miss every fish you try to set on. Go through th the front of the eye (same side as the point, then snell the hook. The hook will then kick out to the side with the point straight up and the hook up ratio is great. Try it both ways you won't believe the diference. Smaller braid will slide up and the eye notch will knick it and it will break as my partner found out. We use nothing less than 85# braid. If you use smaller than that you need to put a dab of metal epoxy at the eye notch and this will make a smooth surface for the braid to ride against or you can tie a loop of 30 # mono beneath the eye notch and it will have the same effect. The above mistake cost my partner and myself a tournament. To test the difference the direction you go in has, tie it both ways then hold the weight and pull up on the line and you will be amazed at what the hook does.
