I use mostly 1/2oz spinnerbaits but after seeing some 1/4 and 3/8s am thinking they might be fun too.
Right now I use a Loomis heavy crankbait rod 6'3" with 50lb power pro too fish my 1/2oz on the delta and 15 or 20 lb green big game on the lakes [same rod]
What would be good for the smaller baits and how do you fish them
Thanks for any info
Rod

ROD:
I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT SPINNERBAITS, BUT HERE IS MY .02 ANYWAY.
WHAT I DO USE IS MOSTLY 1/2 5/8 AND 1 OZS SIZES. FOR SMALLMOUTH WHEN I GO TO ALMANOR AND LAKES UP NORTH, I DO USE EXCLUSIVLY 1/4 AND 3/8. I USE A 6 OR 6 1/2 FOOT MED ROD WITH 8 TO 10 LB TEST GREEN TRILENE XL. THATS JUT ME THOUGH.

Never have figgered it out. I would use a broom handle for spinner baits if I could cast with it. Seems everyone else uses them noddle rods. How do you guys rip their lips off and swing them out of the slop. I used to buy a loomis heavy 6'3" crankin rod and break off the top 6" just to get a stronger action, but as I have gotten older I've learned that a bas pro rod sends vibration to my finger tips just as well.
Are the rest of you throwing them baits in the same places I am? Or am I throwing them some place I should'nt be

Rod,
If you got a little cash to spend I highly suggest the Phenix X10 I toss everything on it from 3/8 oz spinner baits to DD22 crank baits. Phenix makes a unique stick 10 inch split-grip handle Fuji reel seat the lower two thirds of the rod is a carbon fiber graphite blend and the upper third is fiber glass giving it limberness to let the fish suck it in and enough backbone to fight the fish. The rods also have Fuji Alconite guides. I suggest at least picking one up and playing with it.

I think the later!!
Honestly, I use a rod that's about the same action as the MBR843 or 844 (Dobyns 734) w/ braid ... I throw 1/2oz mostly and really have no use for even the 3/8oz baits on the Delta. I mainly fish shallow cover that's thick with vegetation and the heavier rod w/ braid get them fish waters-skiing good! With the current and wind, I have hard enough time in keeping the 1/2oz bait IN the water and down a bit ...
On lakes, maybe with a lighter setup w/ the lighter bait would work better. But that said, I'm still using the 1/2oz and eve 3/4oz baits on places like Oroville; just the smaller profile baits (like the Terminator tungsten series). I don't know how you can throw these baits in 10-20' of water with a light bait!! You'd have to be cranking SUPER slow to do that!!!

I like throwing my blades on my IMX 843. I have switched to a 893 glx just because i wanted a longer rod.
I feel a 3 power rod is just fine only because i have ripped some hooks out before and had a bad experience with many fish getting off while using a 5 power rod.
If you need a little more control just incase use braid, if not use florocarbon or mono.
I like to throw my blades on either 12lb, 15lb or 30lb braid w/ a leader.

6'6" M Fenwick Techna AV. Casts 1/4 & 3/8oz spinnerbaits nicely, and has just the right amount of tip for the strike and great control during the fight. I also use 12# McCoy mono.
This Techna was supposed to be my temporary replacement for a spinnerbait rod that got damaged and wasn't worth repairing. I had it around as an extra wormin' rig, but it was't getting used too much compared to my others. So I decided to try it out for blades while I look for another spinnerbait rod. After looking at several, I decided I liked the Techna's action best. Like it better than my previous blade rod too (an old, lower model Fenwick Eagle GLC -- yes, I like Fenwicks), and I'm glad I didn't have to buy another. Why didn't I make this switch years ago?

YES ROD $ 1.00 PER INCH PER FISH. AND DON PEDRO STOCKS BETWEEN 3 INCHERS 6 INCHERS AND LAST YEAR 12 INCHERS........THEY ARE ONLY ALOTTED $ 5000 PER YEAR TO STOCK BASS. SO, THATS NOT MANY BASS STOCKED IN THE LAKE. I FIGURE THE MORE WE CAN HELP THEM, THE BETTER.

My choice for this application is a Dobyns Rods - (733C SH 7'3" 1pc. 10-17lb, 1/4-3/4oz, Med/Hvy Fast Action Senkos, Flukes, Spooks, Spinnerbaits, Horny Toads) This rod has castability, balance, sensitivity and built with plenty of back bone to put the fish in the boat.

Its my opinion that some fish will jump out and grab it and some will try to create a vacuum to suck bait fish in so they dont have to totally leave an ambush spot. If they can suck a crawdad straight off the bottom (seen smallies do it in Canada) a largie can suck minnows out of the middle of the water. So yeah I think the fiberglass tip helps

My thought on fiberglass for spinnerbaits is. Sometimes as discussed, the bass does come from behind the bait and try to suck it in. In these times I am almost am sure you do not or can not feel that bite, especially with fiberglass rod.
This is the main reason I personally will use graphite for all my spinnerbait and crankbait fishing.
It is those subtile bites/hits that you can detect with graphite that counts. Just learn to not set the hook so hard, you will catch the fish.

Loomis SBR812 is what I have. Not the most powerful rod, but it has enough backbone IMO. The feel is great.
