Talk to your Credit Card company. That's the easiest way to start the conversation. If that doesn't work and if he doesn't respond to your messages you can always file in small claims court to recover the $1000. Usually that sort of motivation will speed things up.
Next time get everything in writing before placing any orders.

100% agree with contacting your credit card company and filing a complaint about the vendor not producing the merchandise with them.

Like others have said go through your credit card company.
Tell them what you have stated here and that you want to initiate a chargeback. In order to stop the chargeback, he will have to provide proof that he performed the service agreed upon and you received the goods.

I went through the same thing with a boat mechanic. I gave him a deposit to rebuild my boat motor. He kept coming up with excuses why it wasn't done until i called and his phone was disconnected and he went out of business. Took him to court and won the case but he filed bankruptcy and i haven't seen a dime. Don't waste your time taking him to court you will just waste more time and money. if your credit card company cant do anything for you then take matters into your own hands, take that how you want (angry letter, beating, or just forget about it). The lesson i learned is never give anyone money ahead of time that you are not willing to lose (deposit, gambling, loan, ect.). Sorry that this happened to you but make sure you take something positive from this even if its a shitty lesson learned.

You know his address right? If he doesnt want to make things right there are always ways to get even. May not get your money back but might prevent him from screwing someone else.
I am not trying to sound like a tough guy troublemaker but sometimes thieves need to see that they cant just steal from people and walk away scott free.

Stewart, Call the credit card company and tell them you were charged for an item and did not recieve it. They usually will refund the money to your card immediately and they will get their money back from the company.

I order my mount back in 1999 i believe paid half down of 190.00 dollors they told me three months. I called said it wasn't ready said to call back so I did a month or so later they said it must be at the Fullerton store they would get back to me which never happened. Wait three or four months tried again got the run around so overtime i forgot and figured they need the money more then me. I do have a copy of reciept some where and never recieved my mount.
