I have a '98 merc 75 hp and need to either rebuild kit or get a new power trim unit.The motor doesn't stay trimmed up when I'm running.Anyone know of a cheaper way to fix? I was quoted around $600.00 for a kit and over $800.00 for a new unit

Have you checked the hydrolic fluid level?

first thing to check, if it has not been done. Fluid level and air in system. You might solve the problem with this first. Next step is new o-rings. If that do's not do it, then you may well need a rebuild kit. BIll K

when you check the trim fluid also make sure you drop the trailer tongue on the floor or as close to it as the floor jack will let it

Thanks guys,the fliud level is fine but how would you check for air in the line?I've replaced the valve at the bottom of the unit and it helped some but it's still dropping the motor down when I run.
also where can I get some new o-rings?

I hade the same problem this year on my 1088 Ranger. This worked for me. I had to do it a couple times.
Bleeding Power Trim/Tilt
- Let the motor down all the way
- Back manuel release valvr out counterclockwise - about two turns
- Hit the up trim button - if the motor moves back the manuel release out another turn and try again
- When the trim button can be trimmed up wihtout the motor moving - hold the button for 30 seconds in the up position and then 30 seconds in the down position.
- Retighten the manuel release valve and see if the tilt works now.
- Repeat if needed.
Mine took 3 times and works great now and has for the last 6 months.
Watchout, I left bthe fluid filler nut off and shot fluid all over the place.
THIS WILL NOT WORK ON UNITS WITH INTERNAL PROBLEMS.

Where is the manual release valve located? My motor only drops when I apply throttle when putting it on the trailer.

Mine is a flat screw that is on the starboard side of the unit. It is tightened or loosened with a flat head screwdriver through a hole in the bracket. There is a symbol , on the bracket by the hole, of an outboard motor with an arrow showing the motor direction ( into the lowered position). This is the manuel release.
Check online, if you do not have a manuel, for a diagram of your motor.

The trim system is a sealed unit. Air can only enter the system if the seals are compromised or the unit has been serviced. You can buy a used unit for much less than your local dealer quoted you.
