Is the newer stuff like UnderArmour ColdGear clearly better than old-school "waffle weave" thermals? Is there a major difference?

I have some of under armours cold gear and I like it a lot. Just a little irritating because it has a tight fit, but it is supposed to i guess. The main thing I dont like is you cant roll the sleeves up if you get hot

Under Armour is good if you are moving. If you are sitting still, it does not keep you warm. Ask any deer hunter who sits in a stand on a cold day

I bought the top layer about 2 months ago and I like it alot. Skin tight YES, warm YES, Wind resistant YES. Would I buy the bottoms YES.

Can't find anything negitive about them except the price. But its cheaper than the Seal Skin...Their suppose to be a another brand out their with the same material for a lesser price....according to the manager at Sports Authority on Lone Tree.

Might be Champion. I bought some of those at Target but haven't tried them yet.

I think that the modern materials are better than the old school cotton thermals. In a nutshell, the cotton fabric versions absorb & hold a lot of moisture. It then stays next to your skin causing a chilly or clammy feeling. The modern materials transfer moisture from your skin to outer layers. The more active you are (more sweat), the more important that is.

I wear REI or Pantagonia baselayers. There are a lot of other good brands.

I have an under armor cold gear shirt that works great and keeps me realy warm, I got a set of bottoms from costco last year that are the same material but from a different company, can't remember the name but they work great also. I still wear my thermals but only when the under armor is dirty.

The UA "Base Layer" line of underwear is different material from the Cold Gear Compression shirts. It is sort of fleece-like, yet I don't think it's fleece. I love the Base Layer 2.0. Warmth is just right with layering.

Compression shirts are designed to work when you're active/in motion much of the time (i.e. football). I've found they don't work for fishing because we're pretty sedentary. Base Layer much better way to go when fishing in the cold.

There is still only one material that keeps you worm when wet, wicks away sweat, and dries really fast, doesn't hold odor, and that's wool. The Marino wool is the stuff that won't itch. Look at the label and find the percentage of wool. 80% and higher is good. Some of the major brands are only 20% and your paying full price for junk. REI, Cabelas, Basspro, and sometimes Big 5 have it.

r.e.i. has a bunch of base layer stuff of their own brand. i have a pair of the r.e.i. fleece thermals and they are great.

I know the topic is base layers, but I thought I would add my .02 cents.....I have found nothing warmer and more comfortable to wear during the winter months than these......windproof, warm and comfortable and if it rains, put the gore-tex bibs or pants on over these and you will never be cold!

Just giving my 2 cents here... I am a big guy 300+ and have tried under armour and I really hate how it pulls at your hair on your body if you indeed have man hair on the chest!! I have found the best cold gear and it is called XGO and is Military used and tested it has a soft inside layer and it is really flexible and I got a larger size to compensate for the "sliding up the belly..." I will never use another brand again after using this! give it a try. Just my opinion guys.

I just purcahsed the under armour 3.0 which is for extreme cold and little movement. Pricey but worth every penny. This stuff is unbelievable.

Absolutely yes! The Merino Sheep's wool, is second to none, especialy any polyester or old school waffle weave wool! That UnderArmour ColdGear, is not the best, it's 100% polyester.

I agree with this. if you aren't active and constantly running or playing a sport the compression shirt is just a skin tight annoying shirt to be honest. I play Mens USSSA and ASA softball and the compression shirts are AWESOME. Fishing I go with the orginal thermals or old school long johns! super warm!

And the Cabelas outer gear/rain gear is the warmest thing around! Goretex and all that...keeps the wind off and you stay warm all day!
