So yes females get bigger than males and the vent are a little differant but hard to tell. Can any one tell me the best way to tell a male from a female bass?

I had Ray Scott tell me one day, the best way was to hold them up turn their belly toward you and if they had breasts, they were female, if not then they were male.. Sound like a good bit of wisdom, but then again he is full of it.. Smile. Bill K

Ash is correct, you cannot be totally sure without a dissection.

However, pretty much any bass over 6 lbs is a female, since bass exhibit reverse sexual dimorphism (girls bigger than boys), but that of course is not 100%.

I did read a BASS magazine about it years ago and in the spring the female bass vents are more oval and male vents are round. But I'm looking for a better indicator. Thanks!!!!!

Darn if I know how to tell, but the Clear Lake record Bass was reportly a male.

grab the fish with both hands and look real close at the vent..... then squeez real hard and if it shoots you with a surprise then its a male!!!!!!!!!!!

Sexing bass during the spawning season it is pretty straightforward. The mature females will have noticeably extended bellies (filled with eggs) or sunken bellies (eggs have been laid). The other bass we assume are mature males, at least the largest ones. The smaller bass are a mix of immature females and males, but we don't know how to tell them apart without cutting them open to look for eggs or milt. There is no guaranteed way to know if a bass is a female or male by just looking at them. I asked my tournament friends who handle bass all the time and they agree that it is not possible to accurately sex a bass from looks alone.

Well sometimes when you catch a male it may squirt a clear liquid out and Im sure I dont have to explain that. Last week I caught a few spotted bass at McClure that were squirtin the clear. Otherwise biologists may have a better more educated answer.
