The Delta on 60 Minutes tonight....

Not to keep bringing up the proposed Delta canal project, but did anyone else see the Govenator talking about the proposed $41 Billion canal project tonight on 60 Minutes? This will obviously meet some major resistance, but how many of you Delta users think the farmers need to let "survival of the fittest" take its course? I know there is a bigger picture out there on both sides; food not only for our state but the nation combined with taxpayer money to fund the project in an already sinking State vs. jobs in California and not having to rely on outside sources for food?
Man, I can already see this coming....sorry in advance.
Comments?

Kind of a fluffy pointless story but I can see some benefit. Can you imagine the revenues and jobs that would be created if Schwarzenegger can get the free spending Feds to fund this thing? 41 Billion is a ton of construction work. The Davis Professor kind of spelled out the future do-nothing course. The levees will continue to fail and the saltwater will ruin the whole system. Including the waters flowing South.

Saw it, but it didn't go far enough to really tell the whole story. Like the gov said "We want Wadda", We want Wadda"
What's he want a Wadda of?

LMAO!!
Maybe he needs to take a guide trip with Cooch and use some of his "WADDA" jigs!

Then the Govenator can see just how important The Delta's fishing industry is.

Two thoughts.
Don't buy swampland in Arizona and don't buy farmland in a desert.

The story made me laugh. Everyone talks about the smelt as if you can kill that small fish and its no big deal. Problem is other fish eat that fish. So killing it off will effect many fish.
How bout we drain all the pools in SoCal for a start.

bottom line is the dollar rules all. So you people better load up on some dollars or your voice will never be heard.
It is so entertaining to listen to you

guys talk about everyone down here having a swimming pool, I guess nobody has one in No. Cal.
By the way, how come a screen cannot be put up to keep the smelt getting chewed up in the pipes?

Like others have said, the bulk of people are missing the point. It is not about smelt dying off. If all the smelt just died off, you would still have the massive ecosystem collapse that we are trying to avoid. It is way bigger than smelt, but the conservation status of that fish is the tool that is currently stopping the pumps. It is about shad, salmon, smelt, stripers, largemouth... everything that swims is connected through the food web that the current water management is threatening.
I like Arnold's attitude that we can have it both ways. This is good, since we need both farms and fish. This is the type of energy we need to have a cooperative solution. Maybe it will help change agricultural practices to be more sustainable and more drought resistant??? Maybe this will be the reason we build a more fish-friendly water system with greater security...?
Another thing that the video only briefly talked about is the SECURITY issue. The Delta levee system is facing serious threat from earthquakes and sea level rise. If they don't fix the current system, the delta as we know it is gone. It will just be a matter of time.
