I just got home from work and no ones home so im board and I was thinking With all this swimbait craze over the past few years I was woun dering if someone had experimented with WHY the Bigger fish hit these swimbaits? I mean if bass have poor eye sight and rely alot on the lateral lines to feel, I dont think they are seeing a baitfish -vs-trout they just see a big blob that resembles a baitfish, right?

If this is true then wouldn't it be true they would hit anything that was just BIG! I mean what if someone made a 8" crankbait or an 8" spinnerbait has anyone tried these off the wall things? I mean what if you lobbed a 8" crawdad out there? And being this big they could incorporate micro electronics for movement. Sounds stupid ? maybe, I'm just thinking outside the box.

Also what about I huge 8" or more swimbait that sank like a senko imagine flipping that hunk of plastic all day(ouch) I would call it the Sink.......-Bait

What do yall think what crazy lure ideas have yall thought about?

Don't tell all of your friends but alot of the 6" - 12" baits for salt water work real good for large fresh water fish

I dont think bass are dumb. They sure do know when the stocker truck arrives.
I think they will try and eat anything movin!

Yea I hear ya, I have never seen it but Jeremy and I were fishing Del valle one year and he was telling me how the bass and striper just nail the trout when the truck pulls up. I plan on tinkering with a big Sinko bait i'll let ya know how it works out waiting on my plastic from Barlows

Hudds and the magnum trouts swim as they fall, same idea.

Yea but a senko dont swim it slow falls and just the tip of the tail wiggles different presentation.

There are already baits that fall like a senko and very large bass love them, but it is up to you to find them!! Some of us have been using them for ten years or more...

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I think Bass have tremendous eyesight, and I'm sure I'm in the VAST minority that think that Bass don't use the lateral line the way we think they do(according to Doug Hannon).

I think a Bass will hear a noisy lure before it sees it, and see it well before he senses it(through the lateral line). I could be completely wrong, but I've learned to not close any doors on what we know or assume about Bass.

As for crazy lure ideas? The more I experience getting a rainbow stripped off my line, I am starting to wish there was a bait out there that resembles a fish in distress on the end of someone's line.

I remember watching Paul Elias chuck a 12" Mann's Jelley Worm on the Bass Show last year and he was catching MONSTER"S with it!
So big bait's have been around for year's. I know I got so into the light line and spinng outfit thing I almost forgot how to throw a big bait like I did year's ago.

Now what did I do with those's Jelly Worm's?

Not sure where you got that idea, but if you read up on the better studies on the matter you will find that bass have pretty darn good eyesight. May want to check into this a bit more?

I think Roger's right. From what I've read (Keith Jones' book) bass just have trouble focusing on stuff that's within 12" or so. Kind of like us as we get older, they need reading glasses.

That, and seeing directly in front of them given that their eyes are displaced on the sides of their heads.

They also have a tough time seeing when it changes from light to night, as the adjustment from using the rods as opposed to the cones takes a considerable amount of time. Once adjusted, however, they can see pretty well in the low-light conditions.

I know they already have a fixed version of a bird, But---- what if a smaller version of a Roboduck could be made?
Little wings that move, with a timer, waterproof, etc.
just toss it out under the trees in the spring and watch the action.
I could see it now sitting on the top of the water causeing a stir and whammo the fights on.
Just a crazy thought, I know....

Anyone see the January Bassmaster? Look at the size of the worm he throws on his wacky rig. I think it was 13" but was a thick worm, probably sinks very slow.

Makes me wat to dedicate the year to throwing strange giant baits.

This thread made me do some thinking. I made up some baits last night, thanks!

Biteme- kick down some baits and save me the trouble because I am no lure designer but thought if I threw it out there someone would make it. I have no time to make em

Tunaman and the rest... yall are right I should have said bass dont see great at all times.

OK we need a huddleston style bait with a senko tail and it needs to fall horizontally and slow

watch the ROF 5 sink sometime.

Also you dont need to pour your own stuff.. buy a ton of nail weights and trick out the stuff you already have. You will learn alot about the placement of the nails and how it affects the rate of fall on certain baits.

In order to figure out what your bait looks like in the water you actually have to tie it to your line and go fishing DOMinater. You dont remember my modified huddy 0? You should..........

I use those for C-rigs.

I think that bass have excellent eyesight as well. Truth is that they use ALL available senses to interact with their surroundings. Just as we know there are chocolate chip cookies if we can smell them, see them, and taste them too.

Believe it or not this allows them to be very discerning. I have experienced big smallies approach a SPRO shad at Havasu, cautiously bump it, and when they realize it isnt really a shad they swim away. This, unfortunately, happened to me 4 different occasions on the same day.

Frustrated the hell out of me too. haha.
