My friend and fishing partner Erick (darkman) Prado is currently at UCLA medical center and he is in bad shape. His kidneys failed over the weekend. For those who don't know, Erick is on a liver transplant list and has been moved way up on list. They are actively searching even as I write this.
This is what we are going to try and do. We are currently in contact with the red Cross about doing a blood drive. I do not have all the details just yet as we just got this rolling. There are a few people working this issue and as soon as I get more information I will post again.
For now, please pray for Erick and his family and send some positive thoughts his direction.

Erick is a great guy. Last time he was bad like this I told him if I had to come all the way down there to visit him in the hospital, I was going to slap him around a little. He laughed and was out in a couple of days. Soooooo, Erick the threats are for real You better get well pretty quick

OK, here is a update from last night, I talked with Cathy, Ericks wife.
First the good news.
Erick woke yesterday and said "Hi" to his wife. He was able to stay awake for longer and longer periods during the day and was able to speak and yes...even had enough to call me the "chud" when Cathy asked him if he knew I was there the day before. That is a good sign .
Now the bad. He still had some internal bleeding going on and they found it was in his throat ( a common thing during liver failure).
There is no word on the transplant for his liver yet and the family may not know untill the last min. before it happens. He will be in ICU for awhile because of the stress to his kidneys during the failure last weekend. All that said, he has improved greatly since getting to the hospital and made great strides since even Monday...Dude is a fighter.
Ok, here is what a few of us are trying to put together.
After trying to get someone from the Red cross to speak with us all day yesterday, we finally gave up....Mike McGahan (A fire Capt. for Santa Rosa Fire Dept.) called to UCLA and asked if they could help. UCLA stepped up and said yes. They ask what we wanted to do, we said a blood drive. We need to tell them where we wanted to do this. We had a couple of ideas but quickly dismissed them due to the requirements. We thought about asking Rick G. about Angler, but it would involve way to much to ask for. Things like at least 800 sq. feet, running water and the list went on and on and a gareentee of at least 35 pints for UCLA to bring the mobil van. I don't believe the 35 pints will be an issue, but don't forget the screening process.
So, long story longer...we are going to set it up to have the donations done at UCLA, here is why.
#1 they are set up for it. They have the staff and rooms
#2 They have the opition for any who so choose, to also take white blood cells, Plateletts and plasma as well as blood. This process takes longer but gives more. Erick is using all of these things right now.
#3 Im pretty sure we can get free parking for this
#4 It does not put a burden on any buisnesses.
#5 We can set the donations up to span over a couple of days, so you don't have to come just that one day.
I understand that this is out of the way for many of you and we will try and make it as painless as possible to get there and back but this really is the best way as of now. We have not finalized anything yet.
I will be posting the requirements for giving blood soon. If you feel compelled to do this I would ask that you look over the requirments before you come down, so you don't make the trip and get rejected for something on the list. The Blood type does not matter, UCLA looks at it like a pint out a pint in.
Again, we will try and have things finalized by this evening and I'll try and have a post about the times and day we are going to have this set up.
If I could ask one more thing. If you think you might like to do this could you please mke a post on here or PM me. I would like to try and get somewhat of a head count for UCLA so we know what to prep for.

Eligibility and Donor Self-Screening Information



The goal of the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center is to provide patients with safe blood collected from volunteer donors. Like all other facilities in the nation that collect blood, we must follow FDA rules about who may donate. Your medical history, international travel and/or low iron are factors in determining whether or not you may donate. The following information will help you discover if you are eligible:

AGE: You must be 17 years of age or older; there is no upper age limit.

WEIGHT: You must weigh 102 pounds or more for whole blood and 110 pounds for platelet donation.

FEELING WELL: You must be well and healthy with no cold or flu symptoms in the past 24 hours (no fever, sore throat, productive cough, stomach/intestinal problems, etc.)

MEDICATION: Most medications are acceptable.

Antibiotics (except for acne) -- If you have been ill, it is critical that the full course of antibiotics be completed at least 48 hours prior to donation and that you have no more symptoms.


Certain oral medications for psoriasis, severe acne, hair loss or enlargement of the prostate may make it unacceptable for you to donate.


Blood pressure medication is acceptable if your blood pressure is within acceptable limits.
DENTAL WORK: You must wait at least 24 hours after dental work (including cleaning).



FOR PLATELET DONATIONS

You must be off aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Nuprin or other aspirin-like medications for two full days. (For example, if the last dose was taken on Monday, you may not donate platelets until Thursday.) If you have taken anti-platelet medications such as Plavix (clopidogrel) and Ticlid (ticlopidine), you must be off medication for 14 full days prior to donating platelets.

PREGNANCY:

Six weeks must have passed since the end of your last pregnancy, including miscarriage or abortion.
If you have had four or more pregnancies (including miscarriages and abortions), you will not be able to donate platelets. However, you can still donate whole blood.


TRAVEL TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY:

You must not donate if you have traveled to a malaria risk area in the past year.

You must not donate if you have visited or lived in the United Kingdom for more than 3 months (total) between 1980 through 1996.
You must not donate if you have spent 5 years or more (total) in Europe since 1980, including time spent in the U.K. from 1980-1996.
Call prior to scheduling an appointment if you lived on a US military base in Europe for 6 months or more from 1980-1996, or if you lived in Africa.

RECENT SURGERY: Minor: OK if healing is complete.
Major: Generally OK if healing is complete and no blood was transfused (except blood that you donated for yourself).

TATTOO: Persons who have had a tattoo in the last 12 months must not donate.

PIERCINGS: Persons who have had an ear, navel or eyebrow piercing in the last 12 months may donate if the procedure was performed in a commercial establishment with sterile needles or by a physician. You must not donate if you have had a tongue, nose or genital piercing in the past 12 months.

HEPATITIS: If you had any type of hepatitis at 11 years of age or older, you must not donate. Close contact in the past 12 months with someone who has hepatitis may also disqualify you from donation.

HIGH RISK ACTIVITIES—YOU MUST NOT DONATE IF:

You have taken money or drugs for sex since 1977
You have ever injected drugs not prescribed by a doctor
You have had sex in the last 12 months with someone who has done one of the above
You have had syphilis or gonorrhea in the last 12 months
You are a male who has had sex with another male since 1977

Just some quick info.
I have given the phone number of our contact at UCLA to Rick Grover. Rick has stepped up and said we could do this drive at Anglers (Thanks Rick). Now UCLA and Rick need to make sure they have all the proper things in place to make this happen there. I am letting them handle this part and Im also letting Rick pick the date that will work best for Anglers. I will let everyone know as soon as we have the details. to do a mobile blood drive at our store. We would need to make sure we can get at LEAST 50 donors. If not they are a very busy bunch and would like us just all to go up to UCLA and give blood there. The dates they have available are pretty scarce also but they are looking at the 20th of Feb. What do you all think? Can we get 50? I am in so thats now 49...... Rick G.

I have the first Top Stick Pro's event that day at Castaic, otherwise my self and at least 10 other guys would be there to donate. Erick was supposed to help me that day too...and I'm holding him to his commitment So he better be out of the hospital and ready to work. Funny thing is, if he could walk or drive...he would be there Even if I have to donate at my local hospital in his name, I will..

Rick, Im fine with whatever date you come up with. I will also go about trying to bring in others to donate that are not in the fishing community.

We can get this done with just the bass guys imho, but the more the better for sure! Rick G.
